University of Florida - who’s in and major / stats?

UF is a top 5 public university. That is all folks are saying. Folks are sharing their excitement that their kid is going to a great school, with great acedemics, powerhouse sports, highly ranked campus community, in great weather (sorry Michigan). Ranked #28 in nation out of 4000 schools. Very impressive, very distinctly to pull an admit. What more are you asking or seeking here? Do we need to move this to another category, as your obsession is getting off topic

Just goes to show you that top 5/6 means nothing.

Really, not UNC?? Imposter alert (Bama fan)

I can see UNC being a peer of UF. They both are overwhelming loaded with instate undergraduates.

Finally, a compliment! Many folks here would love to win the UNC /
UF lottery. And guess what - both are T5!

Kind of sad that folks are engaging with you seriously. There are some issues at play here.

Congrats - forgot about UF but it’s a Top 5 public university, ranked with UCLA, UC Berkeley, Michigan, UVA, and UNC (tied).

It’s ranked #5 for public schools. But the 5th ranked public isn’t in the same league as the top three. This isn’t HYPSM. Berkeley, Michigan and UCLA are in a league of their own. Then comes UVA, UNC, UF.

UF is a US News #28 overall for publics and privates.. UCLA is #20, Berkeley is #22, Michigan is #23, UVA #25, UNC #28 (tied)

Almost 150,000 to ULA and over 130,000 to Berkeley. Your alma mater has about 85,000 this year. These numbers are crazy!

Yup. And they had over 60,000 applications this year. My son just got accepted as well, and is super excited to attend (over my alma mater Michigan). Big 3, 3.9 uw, 34 ACT

And Florida required test scores, so the 64,000 that applied had to fall within a certain range or they were wasting their time. The other schools were optional, which means more pie-in-the-sky hopes and dreams were shattered. UF likely had a very strong applicant class as a result, especially for out of staters.

85% of UF students are instate. Florida, as a state overall, does not have very good public school systems. So the strength of the applicant class is severely skewed toward instate residents.

So interestingly, when you actually compare like to like, Florida actually has good public school systems: https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/how-do-states-really-stack-2015-naep

Florida is T7 but don’t say that as he will go off on a tangent about how good T1-T6 are, and T7 is where it all drops off

This.

It is impressive how much UF has risen in the rankings and in demand (no denying it) while Wisconsin hasn’t kept pace. Any thoughts? 30 years ago, Wisconsin was considered right behind Michigan and above UF.

Yeah, I wouldn’t use that phrase. It’s racist.

Jesus Christ.

Just another cracker who doesn’t seem to care that Blacks were fed to alligators as “gator bait”. That’s where the phrase comes from.

“Cracker” sounds racist too. One seems accidental, the other seems intentional.

A white person who is ignorant of that term’s origin and the declines to apologize for using it … that’s poor character. We can do better. I have never used that term and didn’t know its racist origin. Thank you for educating me!

I’m confused, which word did you use? One is certainly racist (and intentional), the other seems to be (I trust your facts, as I never knew) but was accidental. Both are bad (if your assumptions are true), but the intentional use of a racist word is even worse. Words are just letter, but meanings and intent can be very harmful.

People who prattle on about anti-White racism are tiresome and have poor character. Sure, both are bad. Anti-Black racism is entrenched, endemic, and deadly. Trot your faux victimization wares to someone else. Signed, Middle Aged White Lady

So, to be clear, ma’am: it’s ok for you to use a racist word intentionally to call out another’s use of a racist word (assuming you are correct as I don’t know) unintentionally. Interesting times.

Assuming you are correct as I don’t know”??? Educate yourself. Google is your friend. You have been given a heads up that it is a horrible thing to say. Is this still common refrain by students at UF in 2022? Embarrassing

All I know, ma’am is that you were not only name-calling, but used a racist name to call out the offender. No one else was name calling nor using a racist word with harmful intent, but you.

Actually, I wrote this as a NP. So I wasn’t name calling or using any racist names. Never have and never will. Just stop.

But you did automatically assume one party was white, correct? You inserted race by assuming the original poster was white and using a racial term intentionally. Many folks are this earth (white, black, brown, etc) have used that expression, especially a student from a school that has an alligator as a mascot, not knowing about a picture 100 years ago. “ _____ (insert any predator) bait” is a pretty common expression. But again, you assumed those using it are white and we’re doing it until ally. That’s the classic example of racism, ma’am. And, I’m a URM, so I am speaking from a position of knowledge. You should know that too, and do better.

NP. So you are saying that if you are non-white it is okay to say gator bait? No one should say it, regardless of the color of their skin. I don’t think any assumption was made about the race of the person saying the comment. The point is that this is an inappropriate to say In 2022 and to educate yourself if you didn’t know what it means. I think everyone can agree it is not an appropriate thing to say. I also think some people may not have ever thought of the origins of the phrase.
