Yeah, I wouldn’t use that phrase. It’s racist.

Jesus Christ.

Just another cracker who doesn’t seem to care that Blacks were fed to alligators as “gator bait”. That’s where the phrase comes from.

“Cracker” sounds racist too. One seems accidental, the other seems intentional.

A white person who is ignorant of that term’s origin and the declines to apologize for using it … that’s poor character. We can do better. I have never used that term and didn’t know its racist origin. Thank you for educating me!

I’m confused, which word did you use? One is certainly racist (and intentional), the other seems to be (I trust your facts, as I never knew) but was accidental. Both are bad (if your assumptions are true), but the intentional use of a racist word is even worse. Words are just letter, but meanings and intent can be very harmful.

People who prattle on about anti-White racism are tiresome and have poor character. Sure, both are bad. Anti-Black racism is entrenched, endemic, and deadly. Trot your faux victimization wares to someone else. Signed, Middle Aged White Lady

So, to be clear, ma’am: it’s ok for you to use a racist word intentionally to call out another’s use of a racist word (assuming you are correct as I don’t know) unintentionally. Interesting times.

Assuming you are correct as I don’t know”??? Educate yourself. Google is your friend. You have been given a heads up that it is a horrible thing to say. Is this still common refrain by students at UF in 2022? Embarrassing

All I know, ma’am is that you were not only name-calling, but used a racist name to call out the offender. No one else was name calling nor using a racist word with harmful intent, but you.

Actually, I wrote this as a NP. So I wasn’t name calling or using any racist names. Never have and never will. Just stop.

The comment was directed towards the poster who identified herself as Middle Age White Lady, since she assumed the original poster was white since they used a suspected racial term in a non-racial context (clearly unintentional, out of context). The string of comments assume MAWL was the person who also used the racial name calling in response to “call out” the original offender. Both MAWL and the original poster were intentional in their assumptions of race and were accusatory. My assumption is that MAWL and original poster are the same, but it really doesn’t matter here.

Actually, I wrote this as a NP. So I wasn’t name calling or using any racist names. Never have and never will. Just stop.

But you did automatically assume one party was white, correct? You inserted race by assuming the original poster was white and using a racial term intentionally. Many folks are this earth (white, black, brown, etc) have used that expression, especially a student from a school that has an alligator as a mascot, not knowing about a picture 100 years ago. “ _____ (insert any predator) bait” is a pretty common expression. But again, you assumed those using it are white and we’re doing it until ally. That’s the classic example of racism, ma’am. And, I’m a URM, so I am speaking from a position of knowledge. You should know that too, and do better.

NP. So you are saying that if you are non-white it is okay to say gator bait? No one should say it, regardless of the color of their skin. I don’t think any assumption was made about the race of the person saying the comment. The point is that this is an inappropriate to say In 2022 and to educate yourself if you didn’t know what it means. I think everyone can agree it is not an appropriate thing to say. I also think some people may not have ever thought of the origins of the phrase.

NP here - But if you read the string, someone brought up the white race in this. No one previously identified as such. Clearly a racist assumption. No one used a word in a racist context until a white derogatory name was called. Also, the White MIddle Age Lady said she is sick of white defense. Who’s white in all this?? Again, racially motivated.

+100. Well said. Assumptions regarding white posters is racist. Use of both words, regardless of intent is wrong. But assuming and calling someone a racial slur intentionally is also racist. Middle While Lady said she hates when white people defend this stuff. You are right, how does anyone know anyones race here. She is being racist as well.

Grad rate in 4 years at UF: 68% Gainesville: Warm, sunny, an hour from beaches

Grad rate in 4 years at UVA: 89% Charlottesville: home to white supremacy riots, cold, full of twisty roads, tiny campus, rural

Almost 1/3 of undergraduates at UF fail to get their degrees in four year!

That's funny considering FL is a white supremacy anti-LGBTQ state.

Again, with the race baiting (can I say that word now?)! Folks love generalizations like this, and these same generalizations about a whole population of people is why racism and other discriminatory behaviors continue. Both sides on this can learn, as when one side assumes moral authority, hypocrisy breeds, and learning ceases.

Thank you so much!! So pace means that if I decide to go, I'll have to do online for a year before transferring to the campus but with my stats, I honestly didn't think I'd make it in at all so I'm pretty excited!!

PP here - that’s so awesome! Congrats again! I hear that UMD has a similar program as well. He was accepted there, direct admit into business with a cohert, but is choosing UF. We live in MD so would love the cost break, but UF has a great reputation and trending in the right direction. And not too bad compared to other top public out of state programs! Hope you choose it as well!!

Agreed. And the very fact she describes herself, leading with her age, race, gender (“Middle Age White Lady”), demonstrates she likely subscribed to identify politics or seeing others by the color of their skin or other generalizations. Let’s let’s recap, as this is getting confusing:

1. Poster One of an unknown race uses a derogatory racial term (likely unintentionally, as it wasn’t in a racial context), but still wrong and cringe-worthy nonetheless.

2. Poster Two calls calls out Poster One, using a derogatory racial name (in context as racist and clearly intentional).

3. Poster Three (self identified as white, middle aged, female) says she is not Poster Two, but that she is tired of a typical white defense (paraphrased).

4. Poster Four calls out Poster Three for assuming a specific race (white) is involved in this discussion at all.

My scorecard says Poster One should apologize for the inadvertent use of a racially charged term. Poster Two is the worst offender by name calling with a racially charged word on purpose, and should apologize and do better. Poster Two and Three should also apologize for assumptions based on skin color of any poster who didn’t identify as such. Poster Three should also look deep and promise to do better as she clearly leads with race, gender, age, etc (yikes - trifecta!). Now, here’s the mind-blowing hypothesis: Poster Two and Poster Three are the same person! Should do all of the above and then use soap.

Very interesting posts. Most importantly - congrats to the UF#26 admits. I, too, went to top public school (admittedly not a top 5, but they are so close at the top) and I must say I likely couldn’t get in today. Great accomplishment after a brutal admissions year. Curious if this year is an anomaly, or if this is the new normal? Regardless, be proud future Gators!

Since you used the word “modicum,” I guess you’re right. We bow down to your wisdom.
