My view on Ukraine has been evolving in the last few days. Last week I'd be firmly opposed to any US involvement but now I'm not quite sure. Rs used to have strong foreign policy, but now that the populists have taken over the party with Trump as the head (RINOS), our foreign policy needs to be reworked.

It remains that Putin didn't invade the Ukraine while Trump was president (oh, wasn't he supposed to be a Russian stooge?). I'm amused by the various comments on here pretending Trump weakened NATO by calling out NATO's hypocrisy and demanding NATO countries pay their share. And apparently Trump's opposition to the German-Russian pipeline is all part of his weakness And now people are accusing him of weakening the Middle East when his administration played a huge role in the detente between Israel and the Arab countries.

I don't pretend to be a former R as I was never one in the first place. I'm just someone who is pragmatic and not blinded with political hatred and bias. Trump had many failings but his foreign policy was not one of them.

The best description of the situation I've come across is: "In its demented ego-driven way, Trump’s view of the way the world works is intriguingly coherent. And painful though it may be for the many experts who have spent years denouncing him as a disastrous monster to admit, he could well be right: if he were in the White House, Putin probably wouldn’t be doing what he is doing."

Why?

Because as the same writer wrote: "A simpler explanation is more likely. Putin, as a slightly comic alpha male authoritarian, saw in Trump something he recognized — an unstable, unpredictable yet potentially decisive actor on the world stage. Rightly or wrongly, he saw in Trump strength whereas in the Democratic leadership he sees only weakness and folly."

However, I will also say Putin's beliefs have backfired. NATO and the West are responding more sharply than he thought they would. Ukraine is refusing to fold. If Putin does launch a nuclear weapon, it will be a full scale war by all countries against him. Scary, but necessary.

This is one of the stupidest arguments. The whole world does not revolve around America. Putin does not care who is President of the United States when he decided to invade Ukraine. He wants to re-create the old USSR.

You are a fool. Biden shutting down the keystone pipeline made no difference to energy prices as it would have been years before anything would have come from this. The reason why fracking was suppressed is because oil prices dropped precipitously during COVID due to lack of demand. Prices were not sufficiently high enough to be profitable to drill. Trump is on record for trying to disband NATO. Our allies would have been in disarray. Trump and your Republican representatives are presently actively cheering on Putin, an autocrat that has repeatedly interfered in our elections in order to favor Trump. Whose side are you on comrade? The point is that all these Democrats calling people white supremacists for voting for Trump or having retrograde opinions on race are actively cheerleading for a Neo Nazi militia that wants to ethnically cleanse non Aryans from the Ukraine. These aren’t rednecks who say racist jokes sometimes and happen to be in the military. These are actual Neo Nazis who march under a Neo Nazi flag and are armed and state that their whole purpose is ethnic and racial genocide. But last time I checked the US Military doesn’t have a division of Neo Nazis that fly the Nazi flag in official ceremonies and have ethnic cleansing as their SOP. I have to say that this thread has been interesting. The fact that the GOP and their followers are putting up arguments as to why they think Putin is better than Biden blows my mind. Large group of traders within our country. This should be easy. I am an American so I support my president, Putin has alluded to nuclear war. That is bad. I do not support Putin.
