SATC New Season - And Just Like That...

I watched for the fashion and because I’m weirdly attached to the characters, even though I don’t really like them. But I think it was poorly done. Miranda’s drinking problem, for example, was a joke. I wish it had been a lot better.

Did anyone else watch the documentary? I liked them showing the different behind-the-scenes role and people's jobs, but it was 90% SJP squealing and MPK hyping her up.

But also, isn’t Charlotte not supposed to believe in Heaven, as a Jew?

Good points. Sloppy writing.

Miranda never believed in God and fought the baptism, and are you actually serious about Charlotte? Charlotte is a Jew by adopted culture and marriage, not by belief, nor is it even uniform among Jews w/r/t the afterlife…and I’m saying that as a Jew!

The writing is sloppy for lots of reasons, but I’m not sure these are the ones.

Explain to me how you know that Charlotte is not a Jew “by belief.”

SO STOP TALKING ABOUT HER IN THE SHOW.

Kim Cattrall is gone. As long as the writers want to write Samantha in, that’s their prerogative. They could have recast Samantha like they did with new Becky on Roseanne or Aunt Viv number 2 on Fresh prince of bel air.

I thought SJP sounded catty. You cannot recast that character because Samantha is too iconic. It would be like recasting Richie on Happy Days. They should just treat Samantha like Chuck..it eventually goes away.

When you have your own tv show you can make those decisions. I thought what they did with Samantha was fine. They couldn’t ignore her absence since she was part of their foursome for so long.

Not really. Charlotte was raised Episcopalian.

...and? You either convert to Judaism, or you don't. And you would think someone committed enough to give up Christmas (which we saw was hard for her) and make traditional foods from scratch and learn the Torah and recite prayers and a ceremony in Hebrew is a true convert.

Plenty of Jews have sense of the afterlife or the world that don't totally comport with Jewish teachings. We have fluidity. Being Jewish at its essence is about doing Jewish things, not believing Jewish thoughts. Also many of us are empathetic enough not to tell someone that the beliefs giving them comfort are of course wrong.

I agree. I really enjoyed it. Except Miranda. The drinking, Che, her stupid grins....I miss the old strong Miranda.

So I agree with pretty much everyone who couldn’t stand the new Miranda but isn’t that kind of the point. She changed. She left her faithful husband for a person who didn’t even want to define their relationship. Miranda portrayed what it’s like when people make a terribly selfish decision, they really are only thinking of themselves. The viewers who’ve “known” her for decades realize how much she’s strayed from her true self but that’s life a lot of the times, especially when one has lived a life that put others (kids, spouse, parents) ahead of their own needs. My point is that it’s true to the human form to be incredibly unlikable when making the choices she’s made and the writers were more authentic by not making the viewers take her side.

I hope we can get a season 2 where we get to see what life is actually like for Miranda now that she's exploring and living new possibilities, not just being dazzled by novelty after years of boredom. I was so glad to see her with her red hair again.

Ugh I would have been so mad and upset in her shoes. Imagine this person you're in a relationship - or something! - with just drops this huge news on you in public like this. This is how the relationship is going to be though isn't it. Miranda was always the one in charge - and now she's really not.

Has anyone else watched the documentary yet? There’s a lot on the fashion. A really sweet part on Willie Garson. And absolutely no mention of anything that happened with Chris Noth. Very strange.

Agreed on all points. Also, Miranda is doing this to Carrie & Charlotte. She didn't tell them she was moving to LA.

I really didn't like the Big's ashes story. Are we really to think that Big didn't detail how he wanted to be buried in his will? Was this all so Carrie could wear the ridiculous dress in Paris --though I will admit she wore it very well?

Finally- the texts with Samantha were really unfair to viewers if they are not going to bring Kim Cattrall. I would have loved to hear Samantha's perspective on Miranda's behavior.

I honestly didn't miss Samantha at all and I loved her character in the original series. Big and Stanford and Aidan being gone... all fine with me too. (RIP Willie tho.)

The show is supposed to be at least a decade later. Most people - especially most New Yorkers - will have had some churn in their social circles over that period of time. Totally normal. Very realistic. There's just no reason to bring back everyone.

That said, the writers could have been a little less ham-handed in how they handled the absences - particularly of Sam and Stanford - but overall, the main characters in AJLT still have plenty of interesting storylines without rehashing every major relationship from SATC. I'm watching AJLT to see where these characters are heading, not where they've been.

Overall impressions? The first few episodes were atrocious. So bad I almost gave up on the whole thing. But, the series improved around episode four and finished in an interesting place. I'd like to see a second season.

In particular, I'd like to see some more unpacking of Carrie aging in NYC. Maybe her wrestling a bit with whether the city is still the place for her now that the next generation is ascendant. Big dying, is, imho, the end of Carrie's New York. What is she still doing there? Carrie needs to leave to grow into who she'll be in this next phase of life. I see her moving to the Vineyard or similar. Becoming a playwright.

Miranda in LA makes no sense. Maybe San Francisco. I don't see why you couldn't give her an arc that's very much like Nixon's. Have her run for Congress. But this time, she wins.

Charlotte and Harry will follow most likely stay close to their kids and grandkids. We have to see where the kids land after college/trade school before Charlotte's arc resolves. There's definitely golf in their future.

“Che” is perfect for the non-binary “she/he” substitute
For hers/his: Chez?
