I honestly didn't miss Samantha at all and I loved her character in the original series. Big and Stanford and Aidan being gone... all fine with me too. (RIP Willie tho.) The show is supposed to be at least a decade later. Most people - especially most New Yorkers - will have had some churn in their social circles over that period of time. Totally normal. Very realistic. There's just no reason to bring back everyone. That said, the writers could have been a little less ham-handed in how they handled the absences - particularly of Sam and Stanford - but overall, the main characters in AJLT still have plenty of interesting storylines without rehashing every major relationship from SATC. I'm watching AJLT to see where these characters are heading, not where they've been. Overall impressions? The first few episodes were atrocious. So bad I almost gave up on the whole thing. But, the series improved around episode four and finished in an interesting place. I'd like to see a second season. In particular, I'd like to see some more unpacking of Carrie aging in NYC. Maybe her wrestling a bit with whether the city is still the place for her now that the next generation is ascendant. Big dying, is, imho, the end of Carrie's New York. What is she still doing there? Carrie needs to leave to grow into who she'll be in this next phase of life. I see her moving to the Vineyard or similar. Becoming a playwright. Miranda in LA makes no sense. Maybe San Francisco. I don't see why you couldn't give her an arc that's very much like Nixon's. Have her run for Congress. But this time, she wins. Charlotte and Harry will follow most likely stay close to their kids and grandkids. We have to see where the kids land after college/trade school before Charlotte's arc resolves. There's definitely golf in their future.
