Biden's VP?

Anonymous
"Biden has already promised that he'll pick a woman as his 2020 running mate, and has been under pressure to choose a woman of color after a month of protests against systemic racism and police brutality in the U.S. More than a dozen people close to the Biden search process tell CNN that Biden has listened to that pressure: Just four women are reportedly left on Biden's short list, and three of them are Black.

Two former presidential contenders, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), reportedly remain on Biden's list, and rounding it out are Rep. Val Demings of Florida and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Warren is seen as the most progressive of those reportedly on Biden's shortlist, and would likely signal that Biden is willing to be pulled to the left on some issues. Progressives have meanwhile been hesitant to root for Harris or Demings because of their histories as California's top prosecutor and the head of Orlando's police department, respectively."

Of the women on this list, Mayor Lance Bottoms would be the most inspiring pick. Sen. Harris is the safest choice. Sen. Warren is probably the best electorally. I do not know much about Rep. Demings.

Other women remain in contention, per the same article:
"The search is a dynamic one, though, which has evolved significantly from when it started, and sources caution that it could change again as the vetting intensifies. The goal is to have an array of options for Biden, particularly if an early favorite runs into complications.
Former Obama administration national security adviser Susan Rice is being thoroughly vetted, two people familiar with the matter say, as well as Rep. Karen Bass of California, who was strongly recommended to Biden by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Clyburn confirmed to CNN that Bass "is being vetted."
Sens. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois are also among a broader tier under consideration, sources say."

If this article is correct, the big news is that Lujan Grisham and Whitmer no longer seem to be in contention.

This who idea of someone being qualified is ridiculous. Every person being vetted is qualified and smart. The VP job is about more than degrees and even ability to govern. It must be made with an eye toward geography, governance, politics, etc. Let's be clear, white people have not voted for a democratic president since 1964. If you know that you literally CANNOT win without black votes, why would you chose a white woman? What does that help you? 52% of white women voted for Trump. Black people didn't vote in as large of numbers. That's not identity politics, that's politics 101.

It depends on who the sources are. CNBC reported as recently as Monday that Lujan Grisham was still on the short list. Remember that the short list is the list of potential candidates that are still viable candidates. Biden is not going to pick for another 5-7 weeks (he said early August). As we can tell, current events and news can make a huge difference in that list. The list has been extremely volatile for 6 months now with contenders rising and falling almost weekly. I truly believe that the most critical issues for which of these women is picked and announced has not even occurred yet, but will occur sometime, likely late July. The current 24 second news cycle will play a huge role in who will end up on top. As another PP said, all of the women on the list are qualified in different ways. The priority and final decision will be based on who will be most advantageous for Biden come August.

If the surge in Covid-19 continues to grow and the pandemic rises back to the top of the news cycle, Lujan Grisham's health background including her stint as a State Secretary of Health could play a bigger role. Pence is currently the "Coronavirus Czar" and is not doing an effective job. Lujan Grisham would wipe the floor with him in the VP debate if that topic came up.

Interesting article about the Biden-Harris relationship, including rumors that Jill and Joe's sister are unhappy with her. Many negative comments follow the article:

Yeah.... the comments echo what I kind of think of Harris. She seems a bit something. The comments said “opportunistic” but that’s not quite it for me. Sort of showboating when she doesn’t need to? I can’t think of the word to encapsulate that. She’s an incredibly capable woman and cheap tricks just seem below her. Again, I will vote for Biden regardless of who he picks, but Harris strikes me as a somewhat weak choice for VP.

This is the problem with identity politics. You are putting more emphasis on what they look like than you are on how qualified they are for the job.

The Democrats need to start putting at least some value in qualifications for the job rather than solely on identity politics or they are in for a world of hurt as they watch Trump truly destroy the Republic in a second term.

Biden has already said he will choose a woman. Let that be the standard for identity politics and then start finding the most qualified woman who will be a viable candidate in 4 years to assume the leadership of the Democratic party and lead the party to back-to-back terms of office.

It is too late for that. When Biden committed to picking a female VP, this was the predictable logical conclusion - he needs to pick a black female VP. He should not have boxed himself in like that. Why is Elizabeth Warren a VP candidate and not Cory Booker? It was a dumb move by Biden. Definitely prioritize diversity by no reason to show all your cards and constrain yourself like that.

Agree that it was a stupid move on Biden’s part. He should know that the world changes in a second and his options need that flexibility. To me it shows that he is stuck in a 20th Century world.

Kiss of death.

Don’t do that to Booker. He’s a good guy and Warren would bore him to death as the schoolmarm in chief.

The American electorate does not place as much value in competence (or foreign policy) as we would like. Biden already provides a sharp contrast with Trump on competence on those two issues. Doubling down on competence if it doesn't add anything else isn't beneficial. Because Trump is also old and says stupid old man things they cancel each other out on the issue. Age isn't the issue they need to worry about.

This pick is hard. The VP needs to resonate in some way with the swing voters in Wisconsin, Arizona, or North Carolina. Florida is just too weird. In Wisconsin that swing vote is Gen X/Millennial cusp white males that want an outsider. In Arizona it's Gen X white suburban females that need to not be turned off. In North Carolina it's Gen X/Millennial cusp black males plus Gen X black suburban females that want an outsider and need not be turned off respectively.

Karen Bass seems like a great Representative. But she's from LA and a member of Congress. I don't see what she adds to the ticket but maybe I'm missing something. I worry about adding a Congessmember to the ticket and how that makes the ticket open to anti-congress and anti- coastal urban elite attacks. The type of attacks that unfortunately resonate with key voting blocs. But that's

What's the angle of attack?

We know Trump's strategy because it's a rerun: depress gen x/millennial cusp black males, hype up gen x/millennial cusp white males, and scare suburban females.

I think that Michelle Lujan Grisham provides the executive and legislative experience plus ticks off a lot of boxes and can appeal to a lot of the swing states. She's shown that she has governed New Mexico well, she spent three terms in Congress including a leadership role. She served as the NM state secretary of health for a while. In the current pandemic situation, that would be a plus. She can't do a worse job than Pence has on the national response.

Blond, green-eyed Basque descendant.

You're not wrong, and this brings up the point that is often brought up re: Latinx voters--they are not a single bloc and are a pretty complex demographic.

Do people who use the term Latinx really understand what that demographic wants?

People who use the term Latinx are acknowledging "Latino", which refers to men, is not an inclusive term.

Lance Bottoms is so inexperienced, I'm shocked anyone would consider her an inspiring pick. In time, maybe.

She can't seem to get away from prosecutorial theatrics, and yes in a serious political arena they do come across as cheap. But it's the only time she seems to get press, maybe why she keeps doing it. It makes her a more style over substance politician, and I'm not here for it.
