That’s absurd. Do you know who cares about parking? Hardy’s neighbors. Do you think they would allow the school to *not* have parking?!

You know who else cares about parking? The students, because the best available teachers to be interested in jobs at Hardy, not just the few candidates who happen to live within walking distance or along the Wisconsin Ave bus routes.

Do you even know how much parking Hardy has? Not very much.

Do you know how much parking Maret has? About 4 times as much as Hardy.

Do you know who has a site that can accommodate far more parking and athletic space than currently? Maret and their 7 acres. But they would rather squat on public resources and deprive less privileged kids than use their political capital and their strong ‘community’ ethos to work with their neighbors to solve their needs with their own land (like every other independent school does, except Lab).

You do realize that DC-resident Maret parents are paying twice for education, don’t you? Once for Maret tuition and assessments and then in the substantial annual income, property as sales taxes that go to support DCPS. It a more just world, private school parents would get a tax rebate to reflect the fact that they are saving the public school system substantial money rather than using public school resources. And yes, Maret kids who live in the Hardy zone no doubt open up student placed at Hardy for kids who otherwise would be stuck with a more s...hole local middle school — and so their parents then get a chance to whine about the shocking social justice inequity that Maret gets a couple of practice hours in exchange for funding capital improvements to a field.

I hadn't realized Grover Norquist was participating in this thread. The notion that one should get a tax rebate if one doesn't partake in certain public services is some of the worst right-wing nonsense.

But, I have to believe that this is an anti-maret poster, because I simply can't imagine that someone who really supports Maret believes this iss a productive comment.

It’s not as nearby. It used to belong to Duke Ellington school, but just got transferred to DPR. Georgetown Univ. has some deal for some use of it.

Why doesn’t Maret just drive their buses a few blocks more and use it?

Hardy is a middle school. Why do they need more field space? Hardy parents need to step up and fund the DPR field like Maret does or shut up.

Maret does not fund the DPR field; they have just paid for some (depreciable) improvements. The city funds the (very expensive) land purchase.

In any event, the city does not need Maret’s money, and Hardy and DPR’s finances are both part of the same DC budget.

Again, the real question is why Maret is the only independent school that insists it has a right to exclusive use of public assets.

The DC government needs to fund the field. Oh wait, Bowser spent the money instead on sole-source crony “consultants” who run their shell businesses out of the bedrooms in PG County.

Lots of public schools don’t offer parking for teachers. Are you saying that they aren’t getting the best teachers?

If the alternative would be to not be able to drive at all, or have to pay significant amounts for parking (that woudl be the case at Hardy)?

Yes. There would be a significant number of teachers who woudl self-select out of Hardy positions, and some of them woudl be better than the teaches at thge school. In fact, many of the people who woudl need a car would be older, more experienced teachers who have kids and for whom mass transit isn't feasible, based on their other obligations.

The official DCPS policy now is not to provide off-street parking for school staff. So why should Hardy staff get special treatment? School space for kids, not cars!

This parking discussion is a distraction. Of course parking availability and public transportation options vary widely by school location, and clearly Hardy is challenged on both fronts.

But getting rid of Hardy’s parking would not solve the need for Hardy’s field space.

And even if Hardy’s field space were solved, they doesn’t meet the needs of the Boys & Girls Club or other public schools nearby.

And nothing solves the problem that Maret's unique, sweetheart was born and renewed out of corruption.

Shouldn't Hardy have the right to use the nearby DPR field instead of driving halfway across the city to use other DPR fields?

You're not going to get much traction in the public schools forum arguing that private schools benefit society.

What makes you think they're the only one? Obviously there's Lab School. I was at a meeting where a Lab representative was defending their deal by saying St. John's has a long-term lease of DC land. It wouldn't be at all surprising if you scratch the surface and find all kinds of deals like this.

Sports is a big draw for middle school families. Why do all the private schools invest lavishly in sports facilities? Because it draws students.

Great. Let's unwind all of them - starting with Maret.

Let's not forget Georgetown U at Ellington and Guy Mason.

Don’t you know that Hardy is majority students of color. They have felt discrimination and more recently gentrification and now you would make them pay for a park?

If we had no private schools in DC they would have to build more public school capacity in Dc, especially Upper Northwest. And folks could kiss all of the lottery spots, at least to the better schools, good bye-bye-bye!
