This isn't what I gathered from today's updates. The debris spotted on the satellite imagery is still believed to be associated with MA370, but the "search area" has been moved. That is, where they think the debris might have drifted over the days has changed. |
My understanding if the report on Fox News is to be believed is not that they underestimated drift, but that they are convinced that they underestimated the speed at which the plane was flying meaning that the assumption of Immarsat of when and where the plane ran out of gas was wrong. How in the world could they know that? Is someone sharing their "secret" satellite data? The new search area is supposed to be less sever in terms of current and drift. On the pilot suicide theory - how can someone depressed enough to commit suicide despite having such a beautifuly family, bringing shame on them that is being witness by the whole world, also be of the mind to execute such a diabolical and perfect plan? Maybe such a person exists because there is such evil in the world. I am having a having a hard time believing that such a person has hidden this true evil nature from his friends, family, and co-workers all of these years. |
Where is the evidence the pilot was depressed? I get that his marriage was failing, and that he was upset about the trial of the opposition leader, but hey, many people have problems like this, yet few of them take the lives of several hundred people! How could someone whom everyone seems to have liked, who showed no signs of depression, have suddenly turned into a mass murderer? It is nonsensical.
I've been convinced from the beginning that it was mechanical failure. I think it's a "ghost plane" scenario caused by catastrophic mechanical failure that the pilot could not fix. |
What would be nice, I think, coming from all this is a better understanding of the oceans and sea floor all around the world.
You know how people are saying we know more about the surface of the moon than what's under the sea? Well, it would be nice if this tragedy started a shift towards learning more about the planet we live on. |
It is hard to read suicidal intent. |
A fellow pilot anonymously shared with some news outlet that the pilots was very distraught and not in a good frame of mind to fly. Keep in mind there were 2 traumas we knew of within a day or 2, not the span of months or years. Even though he had a mistress, he was allegedly devastated that his wife moved out. Then he saw someone who he thought was framed and sentenced to live in prison. Men are more likely to externalize rather than internalize when depressed. What if he had a drink or 4 to calm down? Judgment then decreases. Add to that, there is a good chance he was not sleeping well given all the stress. I personally am NOT ready to jump on the pilot suicide bandwagon given all the people who have described him as a loving man of character, but I do think it is a possibility. |
Here's an interesting article re: pilot's personal lives.

The search location has been moved based on "new" data supplied from Malaysian military radar that shows how fast MH370 was traveling right after it made the turn and contact had not yet been severed.
This means that "the most credible lead yet" of previous debris sightings by satellites has been dismissed altogether and there is a do-over in this other area where satellites have also seen debris. Experts are calling this "the most credible lead yet". Don't you think it would have been nice if the Malaysians had shared this information earlier...like a week ago? Why didn't they give it to Inmarsat in the first place? Surely Inmarsat asked for it. |
That article is only available to subscribers. Can you summarize? |
Apparently his marriage had fallen apart recently; wife had moved out. There are also reports that he spent the day - his last day - watching the trial of his favorite politician. The politcian was sentenced to 5 years for homosexuality - and then the pilot left the courtroom & got into the cockpit. |
ABC and NBC are reporting:
"Five out of 10 aircraft hunting for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 found objects of various colors Friday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. It said it was not clear whether the objects were from the plane, and photos of them would be analyzed overnight. AMSA said the items included two rectangular objects that were blue and grey — among the colors of the missing plane. A Chinese patrol ship in the area will attempt to locate the objects on Saturday, it said." |
Some Asian countries have a much higher suicide rate. I'd like to understand the cultural perception of suicide. |
Culturally - you are correct. But I personally doubt there is any cultural connection here. FWIU, suicide in the asian country of Japan is accepted as an alternative to living with "dis honor" - or major life failure. Taking lots of innocent victims with you would be an even bigger "dis honor" - in terms of cultural norms. A simpler explanation - to me anyway - is: the guy's life fell apart and he considered suicide. To a crazy/suicidal person, the lives of others probably lose a lot of value. If true, it is so SO sad that he had to take anyone else with him; I mean, there were children on that plane! |
This profile from WSJ doesn't sound like guys who would give up that life for terrorism or suicide.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—One came of age hanging out in bars with hotshot young pilots and sang "Hotel California" at karaoke sessions. The other drove a black Audi and dabbled in guitar. |
To add to this many of the Chinese families are furious with Malaysia because they believe that the pilot was in contact with Malaysian authorities during the flight. That the pilot said he would land the plane safely in exchange for the release of his politician friend. That when the negotiation talks stalled, and Malaysia refused the demands the pilot flew the plane into the ocean. That is why they are calling Malay officials murderers etc. |
