wait list movement

Virginiat Tech just closed their waitlist per email sent to applicants.

Yes, they took off some kids in-state AND out of state (per college confidential and MY kid!).

That’s interesting. Is this something they do every year, or is it possible it has to do with how many students deferred last year?

Lots of schools do this because people tend to go abroad second semester of junior year so spots for housing open up. The school is a business and doesn't want open spots so they offer them to students on the wait list.

That isn’t the reason. Most of these schools don’t have juniors on campus.
They do this so that they don’t have to report the stats of those students in their common data set.

Not true. At NYU as at other schools, this is a space and $$ issue. Stats are the same range as fall admits; my DS is also a spring admit at NYU and I can speak first hand to his stats.. Even if that were not the case (and it is), reporting of stats would be irrelevant b/c stats don't matter this year w/test optional.

^^ I’m the other poster with a kid who got accepted to NYU for spring start. DD has 33 act and 3.85uw gpa; about 4.3w with 7 APs. That’s within NYU’s regular range, maybe higher.

Yes. Often spring admits are high stat, full pay, no hooks.

I thought spring admits were to fill the $pace left by students who decide not to go back after the first semester.

Lol - tell us more about all the things you know about Spring admits. On the one hand, posters are saying spring admits don’t have their stats included with the rest of the class, like the stats are low and something to be ashamed of. Then when someone posts that their spring admit kid has arguably high stats you assume the spring admit is because that kid must be full pay and has no hooks. Could it be simply that the schools were inundated with applications for well qualified students, and the spring admit is a further avenue to add well qualified students to the class?

Accordingly to the most recent Dean J’s blog entry, there has been very little movement on the UVA waitlist. She doesn’t sound very optimistic about future movements.

It deed has been a tough admission year.

So a lot of those high stats kids who were waitlisted really won't be going to Virginia Tech?

Wow, just wow.

Nope. High stats now going to JMU now and URMs headed to Va Tech.

Yeah, some kid in DS' class was accepted to VA Tech via ED. A good kid, but no where near top 20% of class or even 30%. No significant ECs that we know of and no hooks like first gen, URM, etc. Kid has been in private/independant schools since 1st grade. Don't get me wrong, we have known the kid since grade school and are happy that he is going to a great school. He will work hard and be productive.

WRT to the PP's comment on high stats kids on the VT waitlist, I agree, these kids unfortunately will lose out this round if they haven't already gotten off of other WLs of their choices.

Schools made their decision this year: they wanted to shake things up and decided that they would reject (or, WL...so soft reject) stellar students. I think the reality of that is just beginning to settle in form many of this years applicants (especially as there is so little waitlist movement). Plenty of high stat kids were shut out of top schools. That was the radical change this year. Say what you will about the larger objectives, there is no way this year's applicants should have been forced to accommodate an enormous sea-change in admissions. It is simply not fair.

On the brighter side 3rd or 4th tier schools will get some excellent talents and will help to elevate the general a scenic atmosphere of these schools. In the long run maybe it will all even out, but for the students in this round, it surely is heartbreaking.
