Yeah, some kid in DS' class was accepted to VA Tech via ED.  A good kid, but no where near top 20% of class or even 30%.  No significant ECs that we know of and no hooks like first gen, URM, etc. Kid has been in private/independant schools since 1st grade.   Don't get me wrong, we have known the kid since grade school and are happy that he is going to a great school.  He will work hard and be productive.

WRT to the PP's comment on high stats kids on the VT waitlist, I agree, these kids unfortunately will lose out this round if they haven't already gotten off of other WLs of their choices.

Schools made their decision this year: they wanted to shake things up and decided that they would reject (or, WL...so soft reject) stellar students. I think the reality of that is just beginning to settle in form many of this years applicants (especially as there is so little waitlist movement). Plenty of high stat kids were shut out of top schools. That was the radical change this year. Say what you will about the larger objectives, there is no way this year's applicants should have been forced to accommodate an enormous sea-change in admissions. It is simply not fair.[/quote]
