wait list movement

No sign of waitlist movement. Contrary to what every one thought ( including some admissions officers)

Which is of course untrue. Over on Reddit some kids say they are getting off the Penn and Columbia waitlists. No word from Penn.

My DC is waiting for non-Ivies but he feels the stakes for him are just as high. He really wants to get in College X even though the place he is committed to is just as good.

Totally! It is not the exact same as it's always been. And anyone who thinks that is crazy. And do not get me started on Virginia schools and waitlists. Girls and engineering students were at a disadvantage this year. All the kids from my DD's high school going to Virginia Tech are not engineering students. And all of the kids going to William and Mary are boys with lower GPA's than the girls. It's just ridiculous. Don't look at the name or the major and admit them on stats. I'm sorry, but unless Virginia Tech is a direct admit program to Engineering, do not discount students who have worked so hard because they checked the engineering box. It doesn't mean that's where they will stay. They could change their minds. There should be a second option like a few years ago. Ridiculous.

It is direct admit to Engineering.

The 2021 kids might have had it a tad rougher than last year's admits, but their college experience is likely going to be a lot better than the 2019, 2020 kids who have spent their first year(s) taking remote classes, wearing masks, limited campus activities, crappy food, very strict on-campus policies etc. I feel better for my 2021 kid than my 2019 kid because it looks like fall is going to be fairly normal with required vaccination, so he will likely get a more "normal" college experience. My 2019 kid just hit her stride after freshman fall at UVA, then had to stay home after March 2020. Classes were mainly on-line fall and spring ( and living in the dorms with a ton of restrictions and limited group in person activities). My 2021 kid will start college in a much better way. I don't see much difference in the the toughness of their admits--both were top 10% FCPS students with strong GPAs/SATs and they got into and rejected by schools in roughly the same pattern. The only difference was my 2019 DD didn't get into W&M, but 2021 DS did (but I think that has more to do with gender than Covid) and my daughter got into VT (non-engineering) but DS didn't (engineering).

Harvard waitlist moved today for at least one student I know, so there could be a small ripple effect.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Starting college last year was terrible. I know of one kid who spent their first year “at” Stanford in their parents basement.

No it's not. You are not automatically in the Engineering field. You have to achieve a certain GPA to declare your Engineering major. I should know, I went there! Many people drop out prior to this because it's tough.

Congrats!

This is interesting. Harvard has admitted a normal class size this year unlike some other top schools. It will have the largest incoming class in history because of the large number of deferrals from 2020.

VT is now a direct admit to the general engineering school. How do I know this? Got a kid there. Times have changed a lot. VT used to not have ED either but now does

He is going to take a gap year. His choice was community college (we're in NoVa so NOVA is a great option) or work, and he chose work. My husband, his dad and a couple other parents are working together to get a series of jobs lined up (not internships but kinda like) and he will do a 3-month mini-Mission associated with our church. Then he will reapply next year.

He has great SATs, not much to really improve upon because it is 1500+, good APs, good grades, etc. But it is like every school took a look at him said "male, white, UMC = privileged" and unchecked his box. Before everyone screams I will tell you that we are a multi-racial family ourselves so I feel pretty comfortable calling out the racism that I see being used against him.

Anyway, he will survive and he will succeed. But it is a hard lesson for him to learn and us to watch.

There were a few weeks where I thought my DD was heading in the same direction, so I feel your pain. It sounds like he has a strong support system in place and i truly hope only good things come his way. But I still can’t wrap my head around the idea that a student with his stats would end up in this position. It’s an utterly inhumane process.

I’m calling troll on this post.
