Christopher Columbus statues

When are we going to take FDR off the dime? After all he imprisoned loyal Asian Americans in concentration camps.

Yale was founded by a slave trader. Tear it all down.

The idiots who would rail against FDR wouldn’t be worthy to lick his shoes. The feats he pulled off during two of the worst times is US History are more than the entire millenial generation combined will probably ever accomplish.

Tearing down a statue is just so superficial. Tearing down our history is next in line. Just so sophomoric, political and without any sense of the message you send to the world.

It's like being back in middle school reading these arguments.

BTW, slavery was not a US thing...it was a global thing. Awful. Horrible. Global thing.

What history of our is Columbus a part of? The Dominican Republic's yes but ours?; Those statues were built to symbolically state that italian-Americans are part of the mainstream there's no historical component to them.

But at least I understand why those were erected. I have no idea why the Onate statutes were erected in the 90's. Did they not look at the history before they commissioned them? He was horrible. So horrible that the King of Spain actually convicted him of crimes against humanity over 300 years before that became a concept. How bad must he have been for a 17th century monarch to be aghast at his actions?

Seems to me that none of these statues are about history. They're all about politics. I wish our statues were actually about history.

Ok, if seems like the Onate statues were built for much the same reasons as the Columbus statues, except for Hispanic-Americans. Moreover when they were built they were controversial with the defenders being as adamant as the Southern supporters of Confederacy statues. None of these have anything to do with remembering history. They're all just ethnic pride statutes.

But one page ago I posted a link to a thread that shared statues that do reflect history, though they are around the world and not just the US (and of course the mermaid statue in Denmark itself doesn’t reflect history).

This whole thread is bemusing to me. Black man and women are told to get over it, slavery happened a long time ago (and all over the world no less!), segregation decades back. Even though it is as real and tangible as knowing that the great grandmother that caressed you was a whipped slave, and that your father was spit on and punched for daring to attend a white school, and that your neighbor was chocked to death for selling loose cigarettes . No siree, there is no structural racism left, only a few bad apples.

After all everyone knows, even an immigrant off the boat, that the thing to be in America is black. You know, affirmative action and all those other perks.

And yet here we are, very flustered and upset about ......a statue. A statue of someone who lived 300 years back, who we have no real tangible connection to, who we publicly admit was a slave driver but privately think that was a minor indiscretion, a sign of the times.

Well a statue is not just statue. A statue is a symbol and a reminder of what you hold in high esteem. That's why people all over the world topple the statues of their tyrants.

And OUR history is only our history if it truthfully represents all of our experiences, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Otherwise it's not our history, it's your myth.

Mindset of the Save the Statues Supporters: “I desperately need these symbols to reassure me that I part of an elite, protected class. If those symbols subversively also advocate the dehumanization and discrimination of others, so what. I’m fragile I need to feel superior.”

You guys are bad at analogies. Statues that honor people BECAUSE they were brutal colonizers or Confederate generals fighting for slavery should come down.

Statues that honor people for great accomplishments or leadership in great causes stay up even if they had personal flaws.

The point is WHY they are honored. This is not hard.

Which is why Washington and Jefferson's statues are being assualted, even abolitionists, as well as the first black civil war regiment?

Who is assaulting Washington and Jefferson? The only people mentioning them are the Confederate supporters idiotically saying they are the same.

“I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and Constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.”
Thomas Jefferson

Sounds like Thomas would be okay with folks keeping pace with the times and not clinging to old coats as we become more developed and more enlightened.

I’m saying he probably wouldn’t be clutching his chest in horror like you and all bent out of shape about it.

I gather that from this quote of Jefferson, “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.”

I don't take kindly to attacking the founding fathers. We don't have much else to bind us together other than some 18th century sophistry and rhetoric anymore.
