It isn’t an effort. There IS now a union with 90+ teachers in it, that the Administration has chosen not to recognize voluntarily.

The Administration and Board are delaying the inevitable, unless of course they can intimidate or terminate a few dozen of those teachers before an NLRB-mandated election is called.

This statement is just untrue. the affiliated union representative organization (AFT in this case) can claim what it wants to, but until staff have a chance to vote there is no union.

There isn’t a recognized union that the Admin will bargain with because the Admin decided to fight.

Apparently the DC charter world is freaking out about this. Even if the MV Admin has wanted to recognize the union, they are under significant pressure not to.

It doesn’t appear that renovations are taking place to the school at this time? Does anyone have an idea of when this will occur? I know they have a plan, but with it being May, I hope the building will be ready to go in August.

Much of renovation is permitting, from my understanding. Hopefully that's what they are going through now. I would not worry just yet.

At board meeting last night, they said that renovations were starting in June as planned.

Any other info you can share that might be helpful to the enrolled MV8 families?

There was a lot of complaining by parents and teachers. Caveat Emptor

Are the minutes published somewhere?

The group supporting the MV teachers union effort - @DCACTS - live tweeted the meeting. Obviously they have a point of view, but I haven’t seen anything else publicly yet.

There are lengthy posts here about opposition to the new school. Many think Mundo is growing too soon.

Current MV parent - they still haven't proven their concept works. The administration is unresponsive and uncommunicative to parents, the test scores are subpar - in the most recent PARCC testing, my child admitteed they haven't been taught much of what they are testing for. The kids do not receive grades, just binders with confusing rubrics so you can't actually assess their performance level, and there are not enoug special ed teachers for those in need. Oh, and they haven't figured out the DCI feeder school dilema. Need I go on?

So you are taking your child out for 19-20?

We listed with the hope that more would be in place at this point. For example, STAFF, outdoor space, also the fact that we haven’t been given the opportunity to view the inside of the building. Also, upon reading about union effort it just seems like the current staff not particularly pleased with the working conditions.

I probably wouldn't go if you have another option you are excited about (you like your daycare and have a good IB your guaranteed to by K), otherwise at PK3 you have nothing to loose.

for pk4 & K however I definitely wouldn't leave a place my kid is already happy for a start up

Our preK 4 child is currently happy at his school and we are leaving for MV. Change is easy at this age, and it doesn’t take a lot to make toddlers happy in school where it’s all play base. Our child will realize later that it was the right move when he goes to DCI, and we don’t have to uproot him from his friends, sport clubs, activities, etc..to move for viable middle or high schools.

Until 5th grade when only 60% of his class gets into DCI.... so either him or his best friend are being uprooted.

I think you guys are putting too much extras on this. There will naturally be a lot of kids that leave before DCI. I bet in 6 years, it will be more like a 90% shot of getting into DCI.

I doubt it. This year alone 90% of the P street location is moving on to DCI...
