OMGoodness!! This was us EXACTLY (rural So. Jersey). Family of 8, we had huge garden and all veggies and most fruits(blueberries, blackberries, raspberries all came from neighborhood woods and our garden. We had peach and apple trees in yard. The only foods I can remember in our cupboard was baked beans and rice. The only thing I no longer eat now is scrapple (just grosses me out now) that I ate as youngster, but I have since given up most boxed/canned foods as I've gotten older and know what is best for my body. |

Recipe: - dice a whole plain white onion - dice a pound of plain white mushrooms - turn up the heat to medium and put the skillet on - go have a cigarette while it heats up, because you clearly don't care about your health - decide that you're not politically correct enough to care that the above instructions will incur the wrath of whomever - dissolve a half-stick of butter in a skillet - throw in diced onions, stir for 10 minutes - add diced mushrooms, stir for 20 minutes. - turn up heat if you are impatient and want to see these suckers BROWN and CARMELIZE. - add Steak-Umms and brown. - toast a hoagie roll and smother with Steak-Umms, onions, mushrooms, and shredded cheese. - enjoy your trip to heart attack city, but never admit your orgasmic travels |

OK, I would slice the onions, not dice them. They caramelize better that way, especially if you remember to sprinkle the sugar on before browning. I would substitute crumbled blue cheese for shredded cheese. Is your cigarette regular or menthol? Awesome recipe, you made me hungry! |

I did this, but it takes a while, which takes away from the other name for steak-ums - Minute Steak. Throw two on a square skillet, cook till the top is deep red. Flip, and immediately put a slice of american cheese on each. In 20 more seconds, turn off the stove, pick up one piece with a fork and your finger, let the grease drain off (and there's a lot of it), and fold into a perfect square on a piece of white bread. Repeat with other steak-um (one sandwich). Smother with ketchup, top with another piece of white bread, and enjoy. It actually takes longer to take the things out of the refrigerator than to cook. |

Kraft mac & cheese: Get two boxes; throw out macaroni from one; prepare remaining macaroni with both packets of cheese. Add all that butter. Pineapple banana salad: For each serving place a circular slice of pineapple on a saucer. Place half a banana in the upright position in the middle of the pineapple slice. Place a dab of mayonnaise and a maraschino cherry on the tip of the banana. Enjoy! |
