Do you turn off your exterior lights? Neighbors giving us grief about ours.

Decency is subjective (as DCUM proves everyday - as opinions vary, even on this thread), the law is much less so

The least you could do is go to motion detectors so it's not glaring on them all night.

Not to mention direct the lights into your own property.

FYI - more and more states and municipalities are deeming light pollution as a nuisance.

This includes Maryland and Virginia. DC is looking into it.

Our local PD wrote up a thing on our next door about increasing crime in the area and one of the deterrent tips was to leave porch light on at night. If it bothers you, buy some blinds.

Depending on light placement, there really might be one that shines right into a bedroom. I would talk with them about which light is a problem.

FWIW, we lived several years in a dark skies community and loved it. The quality of sleep you can enjoy without light pollution is truly amazing. For that reason, I have some sympathy for your neighbors.

I would never complain to the neighbors about their lights. Our neighbor behind our house keeps his lights on all night and it is so damn annoying. I really don't feel like paying for new window treatments. My kids seem to have adjusted to the lights shining in through their closed blinds. I just suck it up and feel pissed off at the neighbor all the time. I never interact with him, luckily.

That does not sound emotionally healthy. I think you should see someone about your inability to value yourself.

Perpetual light is not just harmful to wildlife, it's also harmful to humans.

And yes, you can put up blackout curtains, but that messes with your body's normal circadian rhythm. Let the night be dark, and let the day be light. Not sure why that is such a hard concept for some people here.

Black out curtains won't make you ill.
Set your alarm clock and wake up and open the curtains for sunlight in the morning. You're nuts.

Messing with the circadian rhythm can lead to sleep disorder. You're the worst kind of ignorant/stupid .

Sleep disorder is a health issue that is not helped by a blackout curtain. The blackout curtains may help with the sleep at night, but it still messes with your rhythm and you end up waking up groggy because you don't have the natural light to slowly wake you up.

Previous PP is probably a fatass who has no clue what good health feels like.

Oh silly, that's just you getting old. Only one cure for that.

If you require total darkness, you should move out to the country where you won't be bother by any "light pollution." Suburban/urban living is not for you.

Honestly, if I have a flood light which is really shining into a neighbors bedroom, and I lived in a TH, I'd get it (and would try to remedy the situation)... but on most SFH lots in that are 0.20 acre and above range I call BS. My little porch light isn't substantially altering the light entire my neighbors window ~50 ft away. And my porch light is LED and uses a fraction of electricity - I don't nitpick my neighbors for not driving a Prius either

My porch light stays on all night. We have lights on the corners of the house that are on motion sensors. If one of those turns on overnight and shines into your window, my apologies, but hopefully it stops someone from breaking into your or my home.

YES!!!!
This post seems a little crazy to me. The sun comes up really early and sometimes I just want to sleep in. I do not think blackout curtains are making me sick.
Loud neighbors are one thing. Neighbors who keep a reasonable light on are not being unreasonable.

I’d have shot them out with a B.B. gun long ago.

A porch light is fine. Lit up all around like a Christmas tree, all night long with no sensors, is being a selfish prick.

Straw man arguments are lame and for the simple minded.

No one is asking for total darkness; people are asking that exterior lights not be shined into their bedrooms.
