Do you turn off your exterior lights? Neighbors giving us grief about ours.

1/. malfunctioning of motion sensing. doesn't necessary always turn on with moving objects.

2/. if someone moved very slowly, s/he could trick the detector and lights won't turn on.

We have motion sensing lights on the front and back of the house. We have never had an issue with them not working properly. A lot of our neighbors keep their lights on all night, but we are not right on top of one another either (I can see how that might be an issue with lights on all night). I don't know how close the OP is to the neighbors. Just giving my own experience.

Boy would they hate my across-the-street neighbors. At Christmas they put up a ton of lights and then leave them on all night. It's like living across from the Kenny Rogers' Roaster in Seinfeld. This year I plan to ask if they can shut off the lights when they go to bed, because it seems like a waste to run them all night.

.

If they want to pay for the electricity, why would you ask?

I can't imagine asking neighbors to install different outdoor lights based on my personal preference for sheer window treatments. I'm flabbergasted.

Porch lights ok (front back etc.) but flood lights, even with blinds and curtains, still manage to light up neighboring bedrooms.

i have my porch lights on, a flood light over the shed that is motion sensor but stays on all the time (malfunctions half the time and blinks on and off) and then we have one over the garage. I dont care what the neighbors think. My property I want to keep safe. They can put up a shade to block out the light.

13:48 here - because their xmas lights are incredibly bright and my window and my roommates' windows both face in that direction. it's annoying. Everyone else on the street turns their xmas lights off when they go to bed. Nobody else leaves them on all night. I don't see why I should have to buy blackout shades that are only needed for a month every year.

Aren't motion lights a lot safer? If you provide light all night, a burglar can use it to break into your house more efficiently. I have always heard that you don't want good outdoor lighting at night for crime prevention.

we mentioned this to them but they said that they don't like to use blackout curtains. they like no window treatment or sheer ones.

Oh, boo hoo. I like to relax in my house in peace on Friday night after a long week when my neighbors next door are partying like they are 18. I've learned to wear ear plugs while I read or sleep, or watch TV with ear buds. They don't get to dictate whether you leave your lights on. They need to get over it.

Where do you live? I live in the city and I am damned sure leaving my lights on at night, especially since my house abuts an alley. Anyone who doesn't like it can lump it.

my neighbors have every right to have their lights on their property but they dont have a right for them to shine on my property.

Motion sensors work perfectly fine for us. Besides, there is too much light pollution anyway.

There was research done where in Chicago they installed alot of streetlights in alleyways throughout the city to thwart crime. After several years of the program, they ran out of money and only installed lights in half the neighborhoods originally planned.

Crime went up 30% in the neighborhoods where the lights were installed. They think the light actually aids criminals! Just throwing it out there...

Our HOA encourages neighbors to keep a light on at night. Unless you have something huge and excessively bright, your neighbors need to get new curtains if it's bothering them so much.

Love this. So you should risk break-in because of what they don't like? Tell these entitled idiots to stuff it.

I am surprised at the number of people who leave lights on all night. On my block I'd say about 3/4 of houses have porch lights, but most of them turn off by midnight or so.
