My neighbor shines a very bright light outside his garage and his light is not anywhere near any of his windows. When we sit on our back porch we are lit up by his light, and when we sit in our sunroom, I can read the names of the books on our shelves by his light. It is not pleasant to sit in those rooms any more or to be outside. We live in an old house which cannot be air conditioned and we need the windows opened so no window air conditioners either. Their light shines straight in to our house and lights all of our house up. They never experience the obnoxiousness of their own lights. When I walk out my back door, their light goes on when it is on sensor. Most of the time they keep it on all night long. We really don't want to live here any more. I think they should move it so that it is on the front of their house and so that it illuminates their house and not mine.

1) Ask nicely if they can perhaps direct the light away from your house
2) It's not their fault you don't have central air, that is your issue, they do not have to regulate THEIR lives according to your choices .AT.ALL

There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO LIGHT THE OUTDOORS AT NIGHT!! No reason at all. The sun has gone down - go with that. And she is doing the environment a favor by not having and running an energy sucking central air system. We have terrible climate change induced weather events going on all over the world but people still overconsume for selfish and useless reasons.

Our neighbors posted video footage of our thrice weekly car breakins on the list serve. That’s interesting to see once but it serves no purpose - they are shadowy fully clothed masked guys breaking into cars right under spotlights and street lights both. The lights are useless. Best to let the wildlife function normally (owls eating rodents anyone? ) and let your neighbors sleep - turn off the lights.

Then ket someone jump out of the dark bushes and corners and bust you in the head!
But I'm for darn sure not going to keep my house pitch black and make it easy for criminals.
Go live in a cave if you like the dark so much.

we mentioned this to them but they said that they don't like to use blackout curtains. they like no window treatment or sheer ones.

I suspect the doctor did drop you on your head when you were born.

What kind of vicious people are you? You sound terrible to me. Your light should illuminate your property and NOT bleed as light pollution into another property. That is horribly inconsiderate. Shine them downwards like light pollution laws are written.

+1 !

What kind of entitled obnoxious jerks seriously think they have the right to shine light on others' property at night. And then expect them to black out their house like they're in a dungeon if they don't like it. Outrageous.

... Or you could go live in isolation in the wilderness if you're so concerned by "criminals" that you can't function in society.

Normal people can sleep at night without blasting the neighborhood with floodlights.

We leave gentle front porch lights on that don’t shine into our neighbors’ windows. We hate when our neighbors leave their back porch lights on (floodlights). We purchased black out curtains for the nights they use them and don’t mention it, but it’s annoying that they tend to turn them on at odd hours.

I leave mine on all night. They need to purchase curtains

What are you scared of? Who hurt you?

Turn off the lights if they are shinning into someone's property. No one should be subjected to glaring light from the house next door or down the street in the same way no one should be subjected to someone else loud music all night long. What do you say to the person who complains about the music, Get some earplugs! Really? I don't think so. Get your lights out of others windows as you would get your music out of others houses. It's all called disturbing the peace!!

Okay, if everyone has their lights on then you don't need to have yours on, they are already lighting up the whole neighborhood. And if no one has their light on then leave yours off as well unless you want to be the house that the creepy guy knocks at because his car broke down and your light was on. Or the drunk who's on the wrong street but is banging on your door at 3 AM because he thinks the party he was at earlier is your house because your light is on. Yes, both of these things happened to me in the middle of the night. It was very frightening. So turn the lights off and to go to bed.

And if your neighbors played music all night long and it was disturbing you would it be ok if they tell you to go live in a soundproof room and continued playing their music every night. After all the music is also a deterrent to criminals because someone is awake in the house. So does that make it ok?

Why don't you purchase infrared cameras and a security company monitoring subscription?

Shaking my head at all of the people telling others what they "have to do."

If you want it dark, move to a place where YOU control all of the surrounding land.

If you have a problem with a neighbor try talking to them NICELY first but remember, short of a violation, the choice is theirs to make.

If you are going to start telling people what to do you'd better be prepared to be on the receiving end of that AND respond they way you want to be responded to.

Make America civil again!
