Do you turn off your front and backyard lights at night? Our neighborhood had a couple of car break- ins recently and we have decided to to turn on our front and backdoor lights at night. Our neighbors take issue to it because they say it bothers their sleep. They suggest we change to motion sensing, but DH thinks motion sensing is not reliable. FWIW, our lights are frosted 60w fixtures, and not the bright flood lights.
WWYD. |
| We leave ours on all night, as do everyone else on our block. Sounds like your neighbors need better window treatments to keep out street light. |
| If it is multiple neighbors complaining then I would think that it is a problem. I would be respectful and change it to motion. How is motion not reliable? |
1/. malfunctioning of motion sensing. doesn't necessary always turn on with moving objects. 2/. if someone moved very slowly, s/he could trick the detector and lights won't turn on. |
| The neighbors should be glad you're footing the electric bill for the lights and shut up. |
| We leave ours on all night and so do many on on street. |
we mentioned this to them but they said that they don't like to use blackout curtains. they like no window treatment or sheer ones. |
| 18.10 again. It's like my house where prior owners of my house and the neighbors planted trees on the property line. My neighbor laughed about it since they enjoy the trees and I pay 100% of the pruning etc even on what hangs over the line. |
If that's the case, it is their problem not yours. They ought to put up curtains if the light bothers them. Or they could move where there aren't lots of neighbors. |
| We leave our front light on, not the back lights. Our neighborhood association actually asked residents to keep their front lights on for security. |
| Front lights are on. Others are on motion sensors. Neighbors keep their back light off at night usually. It is rude to have bright lights facing peoples houses if you are close by. Motion sensors are the way to go. However, they should use some kind of curtain or shade too. |
If they really have just a sheer window treatment (or none!) in the bedroom then they deserve what they get! But I do have a neighbor whose bright white porch light shines through normal blinds and I think that's excessive. A good test is to go outside and see whether your light shines on ground areas or structures that are not your property: if so, you should get a better (directional) fixture or a different bulb. If it's just that your neighbor can see a light through his unclad window, that's not your problem. FWIW, I turn out my lights but am considering a motion detector. |

No. We have four sets of lights (sides of the front door, sides of the garage door and sides of two doors into the back yard) and they are on light sensors. They go on a dusk and off at dawn. We have 15w CFL (equivalent of 60w regular) bulbs in them.
If your neighbors don't want to get light blocking window treatments, then they'll need to plant fast growing plants that will block between the properties. You have a right to turn lights on for security. |
Ditto. It is not your problem that they don't like the kind of curtains they need to keep light out. That is like saying please don't watch me walk around naked in my house because I don't want to have to buy curtains. |

Isn't this incredibly dependent on where you live? and how close you are to other houses within that area, too.
We live in 20015 in a SFH neighborhood. Everyone on my street keeps their porch lights on all night. Many of us keep a back porch light on too. A few of us have side porches with lights. |
