I don’t like Cynthia at all. She should stick to stage productions. I’m curious about Arianna in this because she got her start on Broadway.

I will just wait to hear what the non-paid critics say.

The NY Times gave Cynthia a rave review and called her the best thing about the movie.

Paid critic.

Actually, the review was not kind to the movie, the director, or the very concept -- only to the performances by the leads.

If you hate the actress for some reason, then don't go, but objectively her performance is fantastic and her singing is terrific. I like Idina Menzel but I have heard plenty of people sing better - and Cynthia Erivo is one of them.

Also strange that you think a stage performance somehow translates poorly to the big screen. Usually it's the other way around. I loathe celebrity casting in musicals usually, when they can't really sing. This is the opposite - casting people who actually could earn these roles on Broadway.

Pulling this comment up ... Erivo is an impeccable singer. I don't love Kristin Chenoweth OR Idina Menzel. They both always sounded to me like they were damaging their vocal chords. Erivo's voice sounds effortless.

Ariana Grande is also very, very good. Her pop stuff isn't my style ... just background music on the radio ... but she is GOOD. I could totally see her on Broadway, and hopefully in many more movies.

She was on Broadway as a teenager, in 13, but I'd love for her to go back. She was great.

Anyone else surprised on plot points?

I had listened to the soundtrack a bunch over the years, but I guess just focused on the main songs since I was surprised to find out about the whole animal plot. I didn't realize that was the cause of the rift.

Also I always thought "dancing through life"was a fine song, nothing spectacular to listen to, but loved it in the movie and I think it'll be a favorite. Great choreography!

The plot of the musical has never made much sense. It's a mashup of disparate elements from the Baum books, the movie, the Maguire book, and some other stuff. And even though the movie spends much more time on the Act I storyline, I think it still has too little character development.

I would have liked a little more character development to support that fast transition from enemy to BFF. But to give credit, there were hints that the two main characters understood each other better than the people around them

The book and musical are SOOO different there is no point comparing them. It’s like comparing Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho.

I’ve never seen a film version of a musical that I loved as much as the theatre version. Maybe just because there’s nothing like seeing a performance live. I’ve seen Wicked on stage 5 times! Twice in London and Toronto, once in NYC. What do fans of the musical think of the movie?

I haven’t seen any replies from people who have seen the musical multiple times.

I’ve seen the Musical multiple times and I wrote that it felt a bit bloated and that I feel like a number of the songs that they lengthened and added in dialogue in the middle of lost their drama and momentum, but I still overall enjoyed it. It also bothers me that they didn’t auto tune or re-record to keep everyone on pitch, something that they obviously can’t do on stage.

My point stands. You haven’t read the entire thread. There are lots of people who have seen the stage play and now the movie who have weighed in here.

OK thanks. Did you love the movie as much as the theatre version? It sounds like no?

If the movie version is as spectacular as the theatre version, I'd go see it on a big screen. If not then I'd wait for the Blu-ray.

+1 I kept waiting for this Wow moment, but never got it. I saw the Wicked musical with the original cast and the singing blew me away!!! This? Not so much. A bit disappointed.

OK. This is helpful because I think the people who are wowed by the movie aren't mega fans of live musical.
