Wicked

It was fine, but hardly worthy of the hype.

Poorly done overall but well marketed.

Saw it during a flight and I loved it! Came in totally cold. Didn’t know the plot other than “Bad witch is good and good witch is bad” which turned out to not be totally accurate. I loved their friendship. I am keeping myself spoiler-free for the second half, though I can already tell the Wiz is the father.

Actors - I had minimal exposure to the leads other than Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton. He did very well here. Cynthia Erivo was a bit too “heavy” for me - not in terms of actual weight, but maybe all the dark/black colors. I’ve never been a fan of the few Ariana songs I’ve heard but was stunned by her voice here. Can’t wait for part 2!

That was obvious from the very beginning because they show him visiting with the mother, implying they had some kind of a fling.

My kids didn't pick up on it. I wasn't totally sure until his song kept referencing fatherhood.

Goldblum's voice is also quite distinctive and they didn't attempt to hide it.

Cynthia and Ariana were great but I felt the film could’ve been tighter. I don’t think the director was the right choice.

The SNL flamboyant guy and spongebob took me out of the immersion of the film. The first is too typecast and the other, the storyline was too creepily similar to real life.

I saw the play many many years ago. What do you mean - the Wiz is the father? Whose father? Is this a new twist for the movie?

The Wiz is the father of Elphaba. Did you not watch the movie?

+1

Bowen Yang was a terrible choice and so was the Boq guy.

PP here. Perhaps I was not clear. I saw the play long ago but have not seen the movie.

I thought the movie followed the play but do not remember about the fatherhood. Was that a new twist added for the movie or did I forget? (Don’t think I would have forgotten that.)

Not obvious to me I’m afraid. They never showed his face at the beginning, and I didn’t pick up on the voice bc I didn’t know Jeff Goldblum was playing the Wiz until he showed up. I only figured it out based on his tap dance song and demeanor towards E

I didn’t know he was playing the Wiz either. But it was clear that whomever was visiting the mother (right after the husband left) was the father of Elphaba. Then when the wizard appeared at the end and you heard the same voice it was obvious.
