So an aspiring airline pilot thinks diversity is good? So what? I also don't care what gender or race the pilot on my flight is but I do care that there is a pilot, and I think efforts to combat pilot shortages are good. Contrary to what the PP thinks, there actually isn't a long line of people wanting to be airline pilots. Also, women can be pilots, women can do lots of jobs that aren't desk jobs. In case you didn't know. |
Can we assume that everyone who wants to see more female firefighters, policepersons, and rescue individuals (regardless of their size and strength) would also like to see more males as preschool daycare workers? |
Hmmm.... who says a majority-male environment is "toxic" FOR MEN? Re: "normal desk job," what I am alluding to is the thousands of hours pilots spend solo & far away from home, which is a great fit for checklist-loving autists - and people like that tend to be male. If United was recruiting student pilots based on other interests & abilities that might dovetail with the job, it would make sense. Surely the pipeline should be increased. But driving it by demographics instead suggests a lack of seriousness that, from a safety perspective, is rightly concerning to a lot of people. |
Sure, but your comment is a bit of a non sequitur. I haven't seen anyone say they want to see more women in these professions regardless of their size and strength. And have police even been mentioned on this thread? FYI men can work in preschools and daycares, I have no problem with it. In any preschool or daycare you want to make sure there is proper supervision as both men and women can abuse young children. |
I work in a make-dominated field. I need folks to recruit more women. Diverse workplaces make for better workplaces. It can be very hostile to work with all men. The sh*t that comes out of my coworkers’ mouths is horrible. If I file an HR complaint, I will be labeled the difficult one or the ”feminazi”. It would just be a nicer place with more diversity. Men tend to shut down the racism/sexism if they aren’t surrounded by “their own kind”. |
You know there are female firefighters right now, right? Are you suggesting United is recruiting people that don't have interests/abilities that dovetail with the job? Or that women and BIPOC people can't be interested/have the ability to be pilots based on the their gender/race? |
Oh and I also have news for you about flight attendants. |
It’s called setting goals and trying to attract people. The supposition that only white dude make good pilots is ridiculous. |
Thank you for saying that. I know. |
That’s just you internalizing things. Your feelings aren’t valid. Get over it. |
All D.E.I. does is get them in the door since the opportunities didn’t exist previously. Your contention that these candidates are inherently unqualified is in fact racist as it goes to the trope about people of color being inferior intellectually. Only a white supremacist would use this example. |
Bullcrap. When "equal outcomes" is the goal and quotas are set and diversity is more important than skill, talent, and ability, it isn't just getting "them in the door." |
The vast majority of hiring is subject to very little oversight, and compensatory policies that address racial bias reach a very small fraction of hiring overall. Together, these trends offer little support for optimism about racial progress in the United States. While some people may assume that discrimination has declined over time, through increasing diversity in institutions along with other cultural changes, it seems as though, at least in terms of hiring, this expectation doesn’t meet with reality.

I love how automatically women and minorities are not considered worthy of merit! Like they don’t have the skills for the job. D.E.I. encouraged merit hires!! It’s advocating the hiring of people not generally in certain positions because they’re not the norm, NOT BECAUSE THEY ARENT QUALIFIED!! |
Nobody said any such thing. |
