Again, just because they are focusing on a new population does not mean they are incompetent. Women of color probably never considered this opportunity. Many times it's just about exposure. |
They are not hiring based on race. They have a training program with an inaugural class that is 80% "minorities" OR women. Since 50%+ of the population are women and almost half are non-White, it doesn't seem hard to get to 80% women or "minorities". |
Again the subtle stupidity of the DEI concept Why would you assume that the pipeline of people interested in being a pilot mirrors the sex & racial breakdown of the country as a whole? Women are about 5% of airline pilots globally So having a class that’s half women, for example, isn’t just a thumb on the scale - it’s jumping up and down on it Imagine trying to fill half a firefighter class with women (and thereby leaving out almost half the men who were interested) Would you expect it to create… better firefighters? |
You sound very level headed, well informed, wise, respectful, and gracious. If only we had a country of people just like you, we would be living in utopia. |
Snort. 👏 |
And btw minority airline pilots are maybe 10%
Active duty Air Force pilots similar split Private pilots 10% women |
When I board a plane, I always ask to meet the pilot and co-pilot. If neither is a woman or minority, I cancel my flight because I only want to fly on a plane piloted by a woman or minority person.... SAID NO ONE EVER! |
![]() sadly, I used to derive EXTRA confidence from a female pilot, because I figured that to make it to that seat in such a boy's club they must be a real hotshot guess that's over |
Damn, you sound really racist and sexist. It would be great to get more female firefighters because the fire & rescue industry is rife with sexual harassment of women and having more women could potentially change that culture. That being said, it's understandable that fewer women are interested in fire and rescue given the physical demands of the job. Airline pilots do not face the same physical demands so I don't see why they would have trouble recruiting women to a free training program that leads to a career. Sorry you're upset only 20% of the class was White men, but that just sounds really entitled that they should get the free training program and other people shouldn't. |
Is the point of firefighting to have a nice accepting culture, or to put out fires and save people? Re: flying, if you think it's just a normal desk job that women and men should be equally interested in, I guess you don't know much about it, or the paths people take to it I guess it's better to just allow people we've decided we like to jump the line without the experience But keep up the ad hominems, clear sign of a strong argument |
Wait, I thought it was Marxist? You're confusing your talking points, pp. If it's Marxist, it certainly can't be anti-labor. |
DP. Nowhere. The people who think like this are just internalizing things and feeling personally attacked and struggling with cognitive dissonance because they fancy themselves good people. They're also just tired of all this race talk already. |
Yes, I think workplaces with toxic cultures can't be as effective as they could be. I'm not sure what the "line" is that you think these individuals are jumping but as the article points out there is a massive pilot shortage so it makes perfect sense that they are seeking candidates from populations that haven't had these jobs in the past. I'm not sure why you think I think being a pilot is like a "desk job". Are you under the impression women can only do desk jobs? If so I have news for you about nurses, teachers, child care workers and the physical demands of those jobs. |
Okay? |
Obviously PP was making the point that nobody cares the gender/race of the pilot. The below from the article...nobody cares. The pilots could stay locked behind their cockpit door end-to-end, and nobody would care if the plane safely got to where it's supposed to go. "United Airlines launched its Aviate Academy in 2022 to address the shortage and diversify a workforce that is overwhelmingly White and male. The academy's first graduating class was 80% women or minorities. "It looks nothing like the industry. But guess what it does look like. It does look like the demographic we serve. It looks like our passengers," said Ricki Foster, an aspiring airline pilot who completed basic pilot training outside of Phoenix, Arizona. " |
