White flight from MCPS

Probably not the best idea to make major investments based on rumors reported by a preteen.

All MCPS MS and HS bathrooms are full of kids vaping and getting high. Anyone who tells you otherwise either only has ES kids, is in denial, or lives under a rock

My preteen claims they've never even encountered vaping at their MS. All places are not the same.

Mine are first generation immigrants! But we came here legally and followed the processes in place.

There is a difference between legal immigration and unlimited illegal immigration. Please do not confuse the two. Despite what white people think, all of us immigrants are not the same.

Good for you. For many people, it is basically impossible to come here legally.

Also, despite what you think, there are also immigrants who are white people.

So what? Are you saying that people who can’t get in legally are therefore entitled to come here illegally?

I mean, this is an immigration policy issue, not an educational policy issue, but yes, it is reasonable to ask whether it's good public policy to make it impossible for most people immigrate legally, especially given that the US economy relies on immigrant labor.

The U.S. "relies on immigrant labor" but then does not invest in men who do not work in the United States (who resort to welfare or crime to survive) and we also don't automate jobs that have been automated elsewhere (like meat packing). This policy decision, funded by the Chamber of Commerce, is having a terrible impact on education in both MoCo and the entire country.

The Chamber of Commerce, a far-right extension of the GOP, is to blame. Their unquenchable greed for profits without conscience is the root of the problem that drives and perpetuates illegal immigration.

They aren't rumors. Read the news reports and testimonies from students and parents to the BOE. Many MCPS HS bathrooms are full of drug use and distribution, that is a fact.

They are everywhere at Blair and Eastern. My kids told me they can get it anytime the want. No one should be surprised.

Lol, not rumors at all. This has been reported in the news. The overdoses have made the media. Just do a search, sadly, drugs are an issue in almost all MCPS high school.

Which MS is that? I guess you are fortunate! But that’s surprising. Maybe the wealthier schools have less issues with vaping in MS?

At Julius West, we definitely have kids vaping. We had kids vaping at Twinbrook ES! And weed is such an issue at RM, that they have had to close off bathrooms.

Not the PP, but the other thing you are missing is that your kids are very young if they are still receiving Ps. Even at my kids' mixed income DCC-feeder elementary school, the real behavior issues weren't apparent until about 4th grade. When hormones kick in, and accumulated trauma starts to manifest, you can get some pretty extreme behaviors.

In the past, there were paths for motivated and well-behaved kids to avoid those children, as the "Honors" classes began in middle school. Now, "Honors" doesn't really begin until 11th grade for any subject other than math, which means that every single class is fully heterogenous. That includes not just kids with behavioral issues, but kids whose educational experience pre-MCPS was either disrupted or nonexistent.

By getting rid of Honors classes, dismantling METS (the program that used to serve kids with disrupted educations), and functionally eliminating the ability of teachers to impose consequences, MCPS has forced every kid into classrooms with highly disruptive and sometimes violent kids.

No one is winning here. Kids who are well prepared are getting frustrated, but kids who were goat herds until six months ago are also not being served. It is a lose-lose.

This is exactly how it works.

The kids learn to get away with violent and disruptive behavior in ES and by 4th and 5th grade, it gets pretty bad. Our MS has fights regularly. And our high school is definitely dealing with drugs and fights. There truly doesn’t seem to be much that the teachers and admin can do.

Definitely a lose-lose for all involved.

Is this sharp rise in the MCPS hispanic population actually due to illegal immigration of poor and/or violent people from central america? If so this is definitely a broader society problem and blame can be placed on on federal government for it's open border polices.

Federal government AND local government.

Yes, our federal government has been accommodating undocumented immigrants for years now. But also, Montgomery County has rolled out the red carpet for undocumented immigrants so much that we have received more than our fair share.

The blame goes equally to our federal government and our local politicians.

City of Rockville is advocating for allowing undocumented immigrants the right to vote!

If you read between the lines of the BOE meeting, it seems we’re getting an influx of the latter and not the former.

ICYMI: an 18 year old Latina was murdered by 3 other latinos (teens) this may and the killers were recently arrested. They cut off her head with a machete and dumped the body in a wooded area near a park in Olney.

It barely made the news.

^^^This is in our local schools. It’s a gang problem with rampant violence. It’s why many of them allegedly left Central America.

This story was crazy. I only read about it on the OBEX list serve because we live in the area. Not much (if any?) media coverage at all!

I guess this Latina girl’s life certainly didn’t matter to people here in the DMV.

A machete killing of an 18 yo girl. Let that sink in. Tragic and scary. Why did it not make the news?

Tragic and disturbing yes but not related to MCPS.
