That's why it'd be better to assess two schools by raw score rather than overall rank, as Money does (https://money.com/best-colleges/rankings/best-selective-colleges/). For instance, the gap between 15 and 29 among SLACs in USN is 86/100 vs 80/100. Both are essentially comparable, not leagues apart.

Groups of 10 are fine. If you are using this list to differentiate between number 12 and number 16 or number 20 and number 28...you are a fool. Identify some likely target and then choose the best fit. MIT may be number 1 but it would be a terrible fit for many top students.

No one would choose Notre Dame over an Ivy with the exception of someone who values a Catholic education.

How is UVA ranked at the same level as USC/NYU and Michigan? Just comparing it to Michigan, Pretty much all programs at Michigan are top notch. UVA's engineering and CS are middling. Can someone explain?

That's not how it works. And UVA is almost self-sufficient now in budgeting. UVA doesn't come close to Michigan in anything except it does a good job of boasting and striving. My kid did not even want to apply to UVA and went to top 15 school so don't even try with that pathetic oh your kid didn't get in BS.
