+1 we stopped testing for covid back in early December. It was a waste of time.

How often were you testing? Other than DW who has tested a couple of times because it was required before medical procedures, we haven't had the need to test.

We tested when the kids got sick with any cold symptoms all fall. It never was Covid so I got sick of running to the dr.

Thank you Youngkin and Chap for getting the ball rolling!

I was talking with two teaching colleagues yesterday about how we have gone since the return to school with no respiratory illnesses. We all typically get colds, bad coughs, or the like a couple of times each school year. We will still certainly mask, but people who don’t work in schools don’t seem to realize how easily illnesses are transmitted. I don’t want Long Covid. I don’t want to carry any Covid to my mother’s nursing home.

None of us have heard any kids complain about masking.

Youngkin horrifies me.

My kids have been masked all year and both have had multiple colds and one had strep. But interestingly, never covid.

The chances of getting long covid if you are fully vaxxed are very low. If you are truly worried, wear an n95, do not go visit your mother at the nursing home for the rest of the school year, and then find another profession. Illnesses have always been a part of life and in schools.

What are you suggesting? Masks be permanent in schools to prevent transmission of all illnesses, not just COVID? If not permanent masking, when would unmask? Just curious…

That’s disappointing to hear. My kid has complained all year that she can’t hear the teacher. I was hope some teachers are able to see the value of unmasking.

We do.

Principals have a meeting tomorrow and something will be announced.

What is FCPS going to pull to force the masks on teachers still? It seems that we should be allowed to unmask tomorrow yet I know they will try something, even if it’s to make us wait a few more days (dumb too).

Okay, calm down Negative Nellie. Your cynicism is still not a good look. You can wait a day to take your mask off. It’s really going to be fine. Get outside and enjoy the nice weather today. It will help your attitude and make you a better teacher for your students.

I fully accepted continued mask wearing. My issue is that these guidelines have changed and fcps could have sent out something this weekend. And they want to find any reason to keep it going instead of just giving in.

What exactly is your evidence for that (keeping staff masked)?

A plan was given showing the metrics for masks to come off. The metrics changed on Friday. What other information do you have that demonstrates FCPS wants “to find any reason to keep it (mask wearing by staff) going”? Please share the other opportunities they had for staff to not wear them and where they said no.

I’m not poster that you are responding to, but FCPS sure does want folks to remain masked. They said so….this is from their Friday, 2/25 communication:

“strongly recommend that all students continue to participate in universal masking for the protection of students and staff with health concerns.”

Umm, yeah. Wearing masks to help others. What a nice concept. You have a problem with that recommendation (not directive, but recommendation)?

PPs recommending sending sick kids to school and that teachers who want to mask or have an underlying condition should find a new profession are incredibly insensitive. I feel for the teachers who have parents such are you.

And for the PPs complaining that your kid can’t hear the teacher, there are work arounds. At our school we all chipped in and bought teachers portable microphones off Amazon. It was $2 per family for our class and the teacher was so grateful.
