FCPS new info on masks

One teacher asked my HS DS to email the teacher if he was not going to be masking. DS thought it was related moving seats around in case other students didn’t want to sit near unmasked students. Is that allowed?

No it is not. And kids can decide on the spur of the moment to not mask, they don’t have to decide a day in advance and let anyone know.

See the website notice in BIG LETTERS:

UNIVERSAL MASKING for ALL set for MARCH 1st!

Then in small print it says everyone will be allowed to make a choice whether or not they will wear a mask.

Kind of contradictory, FCPS!

I suspect the teachers will be given a script to read on Monday that STRONGLY ENCOURAGES EVERYONE to keep masking at ALL TIMES!

That said, I think it's fine for teachers who have immune problems to ask their students to wear masks (speaking about HS kids here). My DD said that one of her teachers has asked the class to keep masking b/c she has health issues and my DD is happy to comply. That's just being considerate.

Perhaps in high school that might be okay as kids have multiple teachers a day. But, that won’t work in elementary grades. It’s basically forced masking the entire day.

I am waiting for the complaints when teachers choose to keep masking and how kids cannot learn effectively.

Subject: “My kid’s teacher is STILL wearing a mask. Can I request a class change?”

I have a hard time believing it's not "allowed." It's not practical maybe, for the reasons you cite. But, allowed??

Must be hard to go through life with such difficulties, like wearing a strip of fabric across your face. However, will you deal with such difficulties in the future? You poor dear.

I wonder if teachers will feel pressured to mask. I have a friend who is a teacher who has wanted to unmask for a long time. Like many people who is fully vaccinated and had omnicron.

It is not allowed. My admin sent us a very clear email.

"At ______, all students will be treated the same regardless of their masking choice. Students will not be asked to separate based on who is wearing a mask or not. Our interactions with all students will be based on care and respect. Remember, our students look to us as examples of how to treat each other and how to work through these situations. "
