How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

Potassium iodide. Science.

That sounds like a horse paste kinda deal. Same vein.

From the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/radiation/emergencies/ki.htm#:~:text=potassium%20iodide)%3F-,What%20is%20Potassium%20Iodide%20(KI)%3F,most%20sensitive%20to%20radioactive%20iodine.

Still sounds like horse paste and fish tank cleaner and injecting bleach. Nuttery.

What? It's definitely not. If you live close to a nuclear plant (as our family did when we were in NY until a couple years ago) every school and daycare has a supply of KI, and you have to sign an 'opt out' form each year for your kid to NOT be given KI if something happens at the plant.

The more you know...

Potassium Iodide options have decreased overnight on Amazon. Apparently people are buying.

People didn’t flee their homes. Putin may be crazy, but he knows that any use of a nuclear weapon, no matter how small, would result in a massive response from the US. He doesn’t want to die any more than you do.

What is his end game then? At this point he's a pariah and a war criminal. He invaded and attacked an independent country in the 21st century. He may be mad and have nothing to lose at this point.

Putin is 69. Well within dying after a life lived range. What makes you think he cares about not dying?

This shows the areas of impact by severity. You really don't want to be in the orange or closer circles.

Two nuclear bombs used in WWII were about 15-20KT. The old AEC building in Germantown (currently DOEnergy) was built just outside of blast zone (30 miles from downtown DC) of similar sized weapon. Modern nuclear weapons are thousands of times more powerful than the Little Boy and the Fat Man used in WWII. So, yeah, you will have no chance surviving. But you can try.

We are also very close to Hampton Roads - where the US has the largest naval base.

We are screwed. Just watch the Chernobyl miniseries to get an idea about the geographic range, it is heavily discussed. Or watch the old series Jericho, I think it's on Netflix.

I wonder if it will become the toilet paper of 2020 or the binaxnow tests of 2021 and price gougers will try to sell it on ebay.

Russian nukes are no reliable. Which means that one sent for DC could end up in Bethesda, reston, or the like. So no there is nowhere to go from that perspective. A widespread or attack on the US in multiple cities would be met with the complete wipe out of Russia. We would hold nothing back. Our nukes work.

In that scenario not really sure you can plan anything. It is the cold war all over again.

Now they could try to take out DC to kill the leadership. If it was DC only then don't live around here would be the best advice. They are unlikely to try this as it will not work but the only defense would be to not live here.

A smaller device used by a terrorist -- that you can plan for.

+1. I don't you think people understand the magnitude of modern day nuclear weapons.

If only he had adopted his predecessor’s strategy with Putin: bending over and coquettishly spreading his ass cheeks.

Better that then the idiot we have now.

His point is to undue the loss of the cold war. He thinks when he puts it together that he can build the Russian economy and make Russia great again. In terms of calling him a war criminal and pariah. He undoes that in 1 minute with either a peace deal at any point or if he wins. Wins means takes Ukraine and other countries that are now NATO. You would then see a global peace deal.

The US needs to right now send a large amount of forces into the front line NATO countries (baltics, Romania, Poland Hungary) like we did for Saudi in 1990. Iraq would have moved to take large portions of Saudi had we not done that.

No chance in an all out attack. That is not the only scenario.

Global Thermonuclear War. "A curious game. The only winning move is not to play."

+1.

Nice. Might have to rewatch again with the kids this weekend.

Watch Jericho -- someone said on Netflix. Read Alas, Babylon.
