How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

We’ve booked it for 21 days… I guess if there’s an attack it won’t matter at that point and we’ll just stay there. There’s not much around it, and it’s miles and miles from anywhere that would seem even remotely important. Closest “city” is Roanoke, and that’s almost 45 miles away. That seems like the best we can do on short notice. We both WFH and are familiar enough with home schooling thanks to the pandemic that I think the kids will be ok for a while. They’re too young to really understand this, so as long as they’ve got stuff to keep them occupied I think they’ll manage ok….. I never believed we’d be in a mess like this a year ago. It’s just inconceivable. I just can’t even fathom it.

What was the deciding factor? I would like to leave for a bit as well and I’m trying to convince my spouse. We may leave out of the country if need be.

What Putin said yesterday. Or rather, how he looked when he said it. Something’s up with him. He’s changed somehow. He’s always been a monster, but even his eyes look different now. Like he just doesn’t care. He got backed into a corner and started a war to save face. Now I think he knows it’s all going to fall apart, and I really do think he’ll launch missiles out of sheer spite. If he’s going to lose, why not take the world down with him, kinda deal. I wonder if he has a terminal illness? I don’t know, but we’re getting out. If nothing comes of it, well the worst thing is that we paid for 3 weeks in a shabby looking 2 bedroom cabin in the middle of nowhere. I’ll take that gamble.

That money could be much better spent on mental health treatment. Good lord.

How many Ukrainians shrugged off an invasion last week and then it happened? I just saw video of a civilian in his car getting crushed by a tank. Things I'm sure he never would of thought could happen to him in a million years.

How far away from DC would be safe from a nuclear bomb? Are we taking like a few miles, like silver spring, or dozens of miles, like Gaithersburg or somewhere in Virginia. Would like to stay in MD if possible.

Somewhere where you can say - "What was that?"

I can't believe the movie War Games hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread! Maybe it's because I'm also Gen X, but I saw that movie many times.

Global Thermonuclear War. "A curious game. The only winning move is not to play."

To everyone running for the hills, if you want a movie recommendation once you get settled in your Airbnb, check out Time of the Wolf.

California?

All of you need to get back to work.

It depends on the size of the bomb and which way the wind is blowing. West and north of the city have better odds than east or south. Unless you are going to move to Poolesville today, by the time something happened it would be too late for you to drive anywhere anyway. Better to hunker down where you are and hope for the best.

There is not going to be a nuclear war. Just stop. The hysterics aren’t helping you or your kids. I’m old. I remember when there actually was a real risk of nuclear war. People didn’t flee their homes. Putin may be crazy, but he knows that any use of a nuclear weapon, no matter how small, would result in a massive response from the US. He doesn’t want to die any more than you do.

What is his end game then? At this point he's a pariah and a war criminal. He invaded and attacked an independent country in the 21st century. He may be mad and have nothing to lose at this point.

He wants to maintain power domestically and his timeline in shrinking. He's 69. So this is an example of how he wants to hold power for the rest of his life. "See what we did? Look at me, West. If you don't leave me alone, I'll shake the saber."

If only he had adopted his predecessor’s strategy with Putin: bending over and coquettishly spreading his ass cheeks.

Why do you people like to use LOL so much? I haven’t seen anyone using this in ages, besides Trump followers.
