How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

I grew up here and we never bothered with those “duck and cover” drills in school. We knew we were toast if the Soviets launched against DC.

This. My dad alwyas said he knew it would be coming when the cia neighbors left to their bunker though.

I figured back then I would have 5 minutes ish to get into a basement or the center of a tall building. Looked like greatest possibility would be for radiation to blow east or northeast. Seems logical because weather normally moves in that direction. I think you're supposed to stay bunkered 2 days. Not certain on number of days

There are targets all around here outside of the beltway

This would be a good time to make friends with a billionaire who has extra seats available on his penis rocket.

OP, I feel your pain.

We closed on our house near the Capitol on Sept. 10, 2001.

I panicked a little the next day.

My dad worked at the Pentagon at the time of the Cuban missile crisis. He came home early one day and he and my mom packed us into the station wagon and she drove us to her family in Canada for the duration. I bet the neighbors loved seeing that.

What are the places to be away from? In MD specifically? No interest in trying to go to VA somewhere.

They didn’t have nuclear bombs. I can rationalize an airplane. Not a nuke.

You only have to watch Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen once to know the only tolerable options are to be close enough you never know what hit you, or far enough away you don’t need to run.

I grew up in near a large military base. Will never forget when one of our science teachers showed a film on the potential aftereffects of nuclear war and then led a discussion.

One of the guys in our class pointed out we would be vaporized early on and wouldn't have to worry about it, and the rest of us 14 year olds just nodded our heads. That teacher didn't come back next year.

Living here is what it is.

grave of the fireflies is a tear jerker! I grew up in the NW—tons of military bases there so the threat was very real to us. Basically, they would try to cripple bases and ports, along with fuel storage and potentially food storage locations, and transportation hubs. You might be ok in the middle—but for how long if goods can’t come and go?

How far away from DC would be safe from a nuclear bomb? Are we taking like a few miles, like silver spring, or dozens of miles, like Gaithersburg or somewhere in Virginia. Would like to stay in MD if possible.

There's not going to be a nuclear war, idiot

Settle down, Dwight.

All my fellow fatalistic GenXers! We know it's best to be vaporized. I grew up outside of Richmond. My dad "comforted" me about the threat of Nuclear War with these words: don't worry we live between DC and Norfolk. We will die before we know what's happening.

Why did I open this thread? !

I did my MS in Crisis Mgt. We had a class on weapons of mass destruction. Suffice to say I didn't sleep well after that.

Honestly if a nuke went of in this country, I'm not sure I'd want to be around to see the aftermath.
