I often think that it wasn’t just the pairs scandal that brought about the new judging system after 2002. Sarah Hughes, who really was on fire in the free skate would never have won if there wasn’t the old ranking system. |
I have a different take on it. I think Sarah had youthful exuberance and that "I'm so excited and I just can't hide it" vibe, but she was just SO unpolished and un-finished as a skater. Too many things about her offended the eye. I will give you that this was the performance of her life - simply because she never skated like this again, and thankfully got out of the sport completely soon thereafter. |
I think this is silly because if Sarah Hughes (and anyone else) was training under the new system, she would have trained completely differently. Funny enough, under the new system the Russian pair in SLC would have won hands down. The difference in the degree of sophistication and choreography in both programs was just too stunning. |

Max Parrot winning gold in snowboarding 3 years after cancer diagnosis! How amazing is that?!

I agree…and I was in the building that night! Incredibly emotional all around. |
Quad jumps are not allowed in the ladies short program. |
I don’t mean we should retroactively look at those programs with the current scoring system. I mean that if you took ranking out of it Sarah wouldn’t have won. I do agree the Russians would have won. Without the ranking system they would have been much further ahead after the short program. |
| Who’s excited for Nathan Chen tonight? I’ve gotta say - I’m nervous FOR him. |
Yes. I think part of the strategy was so Kamila could land the first quad. I mentioned this in a previous, much longer post, but the Russian Fed didn’t send their 2nd place dance team. I think they were hoping they would have been further ahead after day 1 and if they were Eteri Tubretzi wanted her daughter, who is on the much worse 3rd place dance team to get a medal. |
I'm more nervous about him clearing COVID tests at this point. |
+1 I was just thinking the same thing. Fingers crossed. |
Yes same!! |
I know, but Valieva is just So Good and I want to see her win individual gold. |
Arakawa was capable of a 3/3 though, I think she played it safe because she didn’t need it to win. But I agree that probably was Kwan’s best shot. Although the armchair judge in me never quite agreed with Tara’s win…. |
Team Scherbakova here. She's just so ethereal. What's amazing about Kamila though is that her skating is SO mature. Typically 15-year olds still have a touch of junior about them in how they move their bodies, coltish, a bit awkward, not in full command. She skates like a woman. |
