King Abdullah Academy Closing: FCPS Buy for HS?

Has the School Board or FCPS said somewhere that KAA will be for those four schools? I haven't seen that. Some of you are really jumping the gun on assumptions.

It would also be less than 1900 students, so it would probably pick up more than just the remainder of Bull Run and Cub Run from Centreville and Chantilly.

If they also add in Poplar Tree, that would get their school back up into reasonable numbers territory (@400 more kids) and reduce overcrowding at CHS.

Moving Oak Hill will deal with the overcrowding at Chantilly, thanks.

Well, they won't need to move Oak Hill if they are moving Poplar Tree out.

Floris and Oak Hill are the two schools pretty much guaranteed to move to KAA.

you can’t have floris without coates and mcnair. it would leave them as an island for westfield.

i think it’s floris coates mcnair and oak hill

Agree 100% you don’t create a Westfield island but there’s always the theoretical possibility you move Coates or McNair elsewhere (Coates to Herndon, McNair to South Lakes). However that leaves KAA super wealthy if is Floris, Oak Hill, Fox Mill, and Crossfield, with maybe a bit of Navy, so unlikely.

South Lakes refused McNair in 2008. The PTA didn't want them. That boundary study was based on nothing but socioeconomic issues.
They won't send Coates to Herndon --they might consider McNair, but I doubt it.

It will be:
Coates
McNair
Floris
Oak Hill
Crossfield--if they can squeeze it in.

If they do this, it will be a 40% FARMS school. They won't do it. It will be Coates or McNair, not both.

Devils advocate, but no one has a problem with Herndon or Westfield having 40% FARMs. Why should KAA be any different?

There will be huge pressure on fcps regarding the optics on demographics of this building simply because it is so so so much nicer than any other FCPS facility.

They will neither want nor need to overtly consider demographics when the starting point will be to populate KAA with Coates, McNair, Floris, and Oak Hill. If it were just these four it will be moderate FARMS due to Coates and McNair. Add one more low FARMS feeder like Crossfield or Fox Mill, and the rate comes down, but it’s still got good diversity and compact boundaries and no one will confuse it with Langley. So the demographics of KAA only become an issue because other people are throwing mud at the wall because they don’t like the potential ripple effects.

Why do you think everyone who doesn't exactly agree with you on every point is anti-KAA? Lots of people are posting here with different viewpoints. Most seem to think its a good purchase. You seem to have very particular viewpoints on who is entitled to attend the new school and there is no indication that FCPS agrees with you.

You are new to FCPS if you don't think the SB is concerned about the optics of who is assigned to attend basically a private school campus.

The demographics are an issue b/c this SB and FCPS leadership care GREATLY about appearances and looking like they put equity first. They literally say, equity is the most important thing. They will do what's logical AS LONG AS it gets them to somewhere like 30% FARMS kids. If it doesn't they will start to rejigger to try to get their desired balance.

Well, I agree with the PP who said that it will be diverse with the obvious choices.

The Westfield complainer does not want Bull Run to move to Westfield. I've no dog in that hunt, but it seems to be a pretty obvious choice. She claims that since Bull Run has a Centreville address, it belongs in Centreville. That has nothing to do with it. It is equidistant between Centreville and Westfield, and with losing schools, Westfield will need another school. And, Centreville needs relief from overcrowding.

I don't see that claim anywhere. Timestamp for that?

Well, they have told us it is to relieve overcrowding in the area. Westfield, Chantilly, and Centreville fit that mold.

Maybe the Bull Run families should be consulted on whether they want to move from Liberty/CVHS to Stone/Westfield? Sounds like they are not the DCUM demographic.

Westfield is not overcrowded though it is over large.

no one ever wants to switch high schools. of course they don't want to move. that's the feedback thru kept trying to hide.

How is Centreville overcrowded if they only have 2300 students? I have never been there. Is the building absolutely tiny? What's the capacity?

Anonymous
I would never assume that FCPS or the SB will do the logical thing.
Anonymous
Well, when they did the South Lakes boundary study the "reason" was that 2000 was the optimum size of a high school. That's right after Westfield had an expansion to 3000.

We went there for a HS game and it seemed like a regular sized HS. They had a lot of field space.
Anonymous
I think their capacity is around 2100 or 2200 and maybe they have 2200 or 2300 kids. Its not overcrowded like Chantilly is. I think the SB was trying to justify their 3000 seat renovation (which may be dead in the water with the KAA purchase). It makes more sense to do a modest renovation/update.
Anonymous
They obviously don't need to expand Centreville if they are adding 2000 seats at KAA and can't find kids in logical proximity to Westfield.
