Government Shutdown - September, 2025 Editiion

Can anyone explain why Democrats have a say in the matter? Previous shutdowns were with Republicans having a majority of the House.

Budget bills are supposed to be exempt from filibuster.

Republicans block Democratic bill to pay military and feds during shutdown.

Because you don't know what you are talking about. They are no exempt from the filibuster.

According to the senate press gallery these bastards aren’t even planning on a CR vote Monday when they finally get back to work

If I were Chuck Schumer, I would approve the House CR on November 18, while letting Mike Johnson know that any further funding would require bipartisan negotiation. Then the House can come back to Washington for the Epstein vote before another shutdown begins.

The house has only worked 14 days since July 4 and have been sent home for yet another week instead of being in Washington working to a resolution.

Um, wasn't that what was supposed to happen after the last CR months ago?

But the GOP can dispense with the filibuster. The GOP has already dispensed with the Constitution so why stop there?

Yes, they can at any time. They've made a bunch of other new exceptions this year and there's no reason they can't do that now. That's what this is entirely the GOP's fault. They refuse to negotiate and also refuse to use the power they have to go forward without negotiating.

This is a tactical risk the Democrats are taking here. The AG can just rebuke the whole shutdown theory of the Carter admin and look like a hero for doing it.

This is the strategy. There is no shutdown. We were told to go back to work at HHS and continue all operations normally starting on Monday. They claim to have found fees to fund us but our work is narrowed to one area of funded services. Either we are all being asked to violate the Anti Deficiency Act or they are reinterpreting the law so that what they have asked us to do is not a violation. I’m sure that all other agencies are operating the same way- operations that are Trump priorities are continuing forward.

I'm working without pay even though I'm in a fee-funded office and our budget is not subject to appropriations. That's how petty and vindictive this Administration is.

Reconciliation bill cannot be filibustered, per Senate rules. At some point, they will just do that.

If it’s important to the GOP to take away the ACA tax subsidy, they can go ahead and do it. The Senate rules are less binding than the Constitution. And since the GOP is agnostic about its constitutional powers, why care about Senate rules. No need for the Democratic Party to sign on the the GOP’s s$itshow on public health policy.

Doubt that. Reconciliation has to be proceeded by a bunch of procedural votes that take weeks at least. The senate can get rid of the filibuster in a day if it wants to though.
