So I'm in a new position where I need to socialize more for work. This means dinners out, etc. When the waiter comes to take my drink order, or when I get to the bar, I'm usually pretty stumped as to what I should order. I like red wine, but know little about different kinds and usually just order a middle of the road glass with little knowledge about what will be coming my way. I prefer not to order beer at these things - too filling. So tell me: What's a stylish, tasty, and grown-up drink that I can order? Doesn't have to be wine. Also, can you tell me what drinks I should order for different seasons?
I know this sounds childish, but it's a genuine question.

| stick with wine, trust me on that DTDT hard stuff and made a fool of myself. Just order the house wine |
| My favorite drink was a simple vodka tonic. I always asked for Ketel One and tonic. If I was in the mood for something sweeter, I'd get a mandarin and tonic. |
| Oh yeah, stick to no more than two of those drinks until you know your tolerence. Two would be ok for me, three would start to f me up. |
| I love skinny margaritas and white wine spritzers in the summer and whiskey sours in the winter. I am also a fan of martinis but I'm not sure I would drink them while working...they usually have a pretty big kick to them. How about rum and coke? Makers and ginger ale? Gin and tonic? Slow gin fizz? For white wine I like pinot grigio or sancerre...not a fan of chardonnay. For red wine I like pinot noire...don't really like cabernet. |
| Mono loco, or a Singapore sling. |
| I like dirty martinis. |
| If I'm out at a business dinner, I just usually get a Captain and Coke (because I really like the sweet stuff). And I'm a soda junkie. Yeah, I know, but I know what I'm getting and I've been drinking it for 20 years. |
You seriously would order that at a business dinner? SERIOUSLY? Any woman who ordered either a skinny margarita or a white wine spritzer I would instantly assume was an idiot. |

Personally if it's an official work function (not a Happy Hour), I'd stick with wine. As PPs have alluded to, you don't know how heavy the bartender's hand is and therefore would need to be very conscious of how alcoholic that specific drink is to avoid getting tipsy.
White wine, I tend not to like really oaky chardonnays (think Kendall Jackson) so I'll shoot for a pinot grigio, or if it's a more interesting wine list then a french chablis, italian orvieto or sancerre. Reds, zinfandels tend to be very alcoholic. Not a big cabernet or merlot person, especially as a pre-dinner drink. I too lean towards pinot noirs or pretty much any italian red. And, I've found that I lean towards white in summer and red in winter generally speaking. |
The title of the post is: "What drink do you order whe you go out?" I answered the post dumbass! Personally, I never drink at all when I'm working but to each her own. |
| A light white wine, like pinot grigio or viognier. |
Agreed. I wouldn't order hard alcohol at a business event. And a skinny margarita? HAHAHAH. |
| I don't drink if its a work event. Pina Colada if I'm with my DH! |
| Cosmo. |
