Is this a real thing, or something conjured up by parents to rationalize the reason for their kids not getting in? |
Mostly the latter. |
It's a real thing. It is also called "Tufts Syndrome" because Tufts had been notorious for it. It's why demonstrated interest is important, especially for your safeties. |
PP. Thanks for hitting the nail on the head. The poster you responded to thinks that high stats kids are one dimensional (similar to how there are posters that assume high-stats Asian kids are bookworms). Most of these kids are club leaders, sometimes in clubs like debate and MUN (imagine the horror) and actually win EVERY competition they go to. It's pointless to list all ECs on this board and, like you said, expose the kid or have some clueless poster nitpick those to death. |
Agree. Our TJ kid made it to UVA, but other higher stats, more well rounded kids from TJ did not. I know some of them personally and there's no way the teacher rec or essays of those kids were subpar. It HAS to be yield protection. The other alternative is stupidity on UVA's part. Given these two options, I vote for yield protection. |
+1 since they aren't honest about their quotas I'm not inclined to believe when they say they don't do yield protection. |
Many, many lLACs do. They say they look for “demonstrated” interest (multiple campus visits or during COVID, emails and essays very specific to the school) and may have ED2,— deadline being after you already got deferred or rejected from your Ivy long shot so now you’re willing to commit to the LAC. |
What would be considered high stats for a TJ kid? I have a junior at TJ and this admission round is starting to worry me. |
4.4 to 4.5 |
Interesting observation! DC is supposed to be the targeted yield protection population with almost perfect stats/scores and exceptional ECs and awards, but just got accepted by UVA. So maybe the "demonstrated interest" matters as DC paid attention to these things in all the essays. |
I'd like to add that a weighted GPA of 4.5 is considered very high stat at TJ if achieved at the end of the junior year. It'd be less impressive (but still very good) if it's a senior year GPA. |
Took most comp sci courses like Artificial Intelligence / Machine learning, AP chem, AP physics etc. 2 years of latin. GPA 4.3 |
Or they eliminated most of the reaches and then threw darts at the rest for the most part. |
+1 I don't know how to explain yield protection for many kids who got accepted by both UVA and other top schools... |
| UVA is on record that it doesn't take into account demonstrated interest, doesn't practice yield protection, and doesn't favor one gender over another in admissions. You can either believe the school, or don't. If you want to be a conspiracy theorist, fine. |
