our pool announced you can lap swim 5x a week for 1 hr, but the kicker is that it is only available for those 18+ which is ridiculous and would mean half the lifeguards aren't even allowed to lap swim.

yes- that is sillly. I suspect that they will have lots of empty slots and will open it up to more ages.

Ours is age 7 and up, but I’d say most swimmers using the lanes are 10+

Ours is 18+ only through the end of Phase 1. Then swim team practices kick in and younger kids can sign up for lap swim.

Crosspointe opens on June 6th for lap swimming only. Thankfully we have 2 pools. 1/2 hour sessions with 1/2 hour in between each session for cleaning. I do wish the sessions were longer, but it is good enough for Phase I. I think my kids (10 and under) can each swim in a lane while I swim.

Your two kids can do lap swimming? Are they club swimmers (year round)?

That’s what was cited by my pool (Newington Forest pool) when they closed for the year (instead of just waiting until Phase 2 to open with gatherings of 50) and if it turns out they just read the guidance wrong, I’m going to be so pissed.

Well, they didn't read the guidance wrong b/c there is no published guidance for Phase 2. They may or may not have read the tea leaves wrong. There is a rumor circulating that the people drafting the aquatics guidance think that it needs to be exercise only. I personally think this demonstrates their lack of understanding of what community pools are like. They seem to think that recreational swimming somehow means wall to wall people. I would encourage anyone who is concerned about this to write the Governor. https://www.governor.virginia.gov/constituent-services/communicating-with-the-governors-office/ as well as your state delegate and senator. https://whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov/
'recreation' is allowed to happen at beaches. Restaurants are allowed to open to outdoor seating. Why on earth would pools not be allowed to open with capacity controls?

Does that actually work? My only experience with trying to write was FCPS school Board and we know they don’t listen.

Just the regular roller coaster. I feel hope that we opened and phase 2 can be better and then read stuff like this that the governor might make pools be lap only all summer?

Not all summer. May do it for phase 2. I think it actually works to write in. I personally have had lots of success contacting elected officials on a variety of matters.

Not the PP, but my 2 kids swim year round. Younger one just did a once a week stroke clinic, but has been on swim team for a few years so can lap swim. Sadly our pool is the one won't allow then to lap swim right now.

My kids could have done it also - but they are club swimmers at a high level (3 days a week at 9, 4-5 days a week at 10). It’s hard for me to see even kids like that jumping in and swimming back and forth with no instruction for an hr.

They pay attention and respond. I wrote to my delegate two weeks ago and within a few days I was sitting in a meeting with her, other state delegates, a rep from the VDH and the VA Deputy Secretary for Commerce and Trade.

Think of it this way. Does not emailing help?

Chesterbrook is opening June 11th Dominion Hills is opening June 13th. Arlington Forest says its opening 'later in June.' Kent Gardens is planning to open, but I haven't seen a date. I have no idea what Poplar Heights is doing.
The pools on this list who have not opened for phase one lap swim yet still need to get their Health permits. Those dates only stand if they are granted the health permit. Apparently there is a long line of pools waiting to get the health permit.

Well I wrote after all. I’m sure it comes across as stupid to be asking for this with all else that’s going on but did it anyway. Haha

Governor says NOVA to stay in phase 1. No other details on pools except to say for exercise and swim instruction. So I’m guessing we can’t go and sit on the deck.

ludicrous. 'swim instruction' gets people much closer together than say jumping off diving board for fun. I want to cry.

I wonder if he’s going to differentiate with this between indoor and outdoor pools. I can see him saying indoor for exercise and instruction but outdoor with just restrictions.

But I’ve gotten my hopes up too much lately.

If pools can’t have 50 people there for swimming or socializing on the deck, if they must be doing lap swim or swim lessons, that’s got to be the final nail in the coffin for a lot of pools that haven’t opened yet. Very sad. I wonder how they come up with these “restrictions” sometimes. It’s got to be riskier to eat in an indoor restaurant than to go to the outdoor pool, Max capacity 50!
