When a celebrity in person really underwhelms you

Passed Larry King on the street in DC many years ago when he had his CNN talk show. He’s very short, looked mad and like he was talking to himself.

John Waters sat in front of us on a flight. He was wearing a hat and was very quiet, kept to himself. Recognized him immediately as he was putting his bag in overhead bin.

Personalitywise, she was basically normal to talk to...seemed a little out of her element at a normal-people party in Pennsylvania.

Gene Siskel came into a shop where I was working in 1995 in NYC. He just seemed normal. I never would have recognized him if somebody hadn't pointed him out.

I knew Chloe Sevigny growing up. She was very sullen/unfriendly as a child, just would stare at you as if you had two heads, and was sort of this waify flower child who wore nightgowns to school as a teenager. Her older brother was nice but kind of messed up, always dressed like Jeff Spicoli and I believe they sent him away to school finally, but he later became some big celebrity DJ and is very wealthy now.

Also knew Kate Bosworth as a teenager right before she started her acting career. Very pretty girl but no ego problems and a mean/queen bee type. I was a youth group leader and she was one of those kids who acts very sweet to adults but then mocks them behind their backs.

Ohhh this is the best one! Juicy & interesting, thanks for sharing.

Saw Keira Knightly out with her DD once and she looked very normal and shy. I barely recognised her. Though her jawline really stood out...it’s not as attractive in person as it is on film.

What an odd thing to say when he helped you out. Maybe you're just not used to people with different accents than your own?

Np. This Salman Rushdie description is really interesting to me. OP said he didn't speak, so your accent comment is off the mark. What are you irritated with/offended by?

He didn’t offend me...he did me a solid. It was a super busy train station and I had my kid with me. It was really nice that we helped me out and I was taken about by the intensity of him even though the encounter lasted only a few seconds.

I can see that. He does have that intense and mysterious vibe.

Wow. How did that happen?

He's 6'2". Maybe you saw a look a like shorty?

I used to date the short version of a well known celebrity.

I went to college with a look-alike tiny Brad Pitt.

Schwarzenegger is not 6'2". I've run into him a couple of times, back when he lived (or visited) DC regularly. I'm 5'8", and he was much closer to my height then that. Most of these guys lie and are made to look taller on film. He was huge, though.

I also flew from Bangalore to Frankfurt sitting next to Richard Gere--stood next to him a few times. He's quite a bit smaller than the 5'11" on his bio, too. He was quite nice, but pretty scruffy looking.

Schwarzenegger had a history of body building competitions where height/weight was well documented. Maybe most celebrities can get away with fibbing a bit about their stats but I don't think that was possible for a guy like Arnold. I do wonder if maybe you ran into a look a like.

Saw him a few weeks ago while he was doing some bizarre press at the CA wildfires. He looks really rough, almost sickly.

Yes, he doesn't look well. He's only 71 and he does seem older than that. I think his separation from Maria Shriver really has taken a toll on him. They still aren't officially divorced. Apparently he won't sign the papers to make their divorce official. It's a shame.

I saw Arnold Shwarzanneger in the 90s giving a speech. He looked like a star, acted similar to interviews on TV. I can’t say I noticed his exact height. He was tall.

DH met Kramer from Seinfeld. He said he was tall and looked normal, and his personality was completely different from on the show. So takeaway was that he’s a good actor.

In NY city, I saw someone who was noticeable looking, looked impressive, an African American woman with glowing beautiful skin, nice clothes, very petite. I asked someone if she was someone famous because there was just something about her. She was Diahna Carroll, famous in the 80s I think on Dynasty.

It wasn't a lookalike. I exchanged a few words with him, same accent. He's not short, he's just not particularly tall, and I'm pretty certain not 6'2". Definitely not the giant as portrayed in movies. I think it's hard to be a bodybuilder if you're very tall--that's a sport for slightly smaller men.

Here's a pic of Arnie with Obama, who is 6'1". Looks shorter here, at least to me, and in keeping with my recollection. I picked Obama only because it's pretty easy to find pics of him.

Heart issues from the 'roids during his bodybuilding days. I heard she doesn't want to finalize the divorce due to her Catholicism. He has a young girlfriend now of course.

Carla Hall of Top Chef fame is stunning. She's really tall.

The Goo Goo Dolls/Dave Grohl very chill, nice guys. Waited on them at two Great American Restaurants in the early 2000s. Same goes for Connie Chung & Maury Povich. Pretty much to a one, Congress members and Senators were jerks.

Questlove and the rest of the Roots - nice guys, very chill, but extremely stoned while playing basketball prior to doing a college show - like, we were wondering how we were going to get them off the court and on stage.

Various members of Dave Matthews Band, but not DM himself - all nice, down to earth, seemed like attentive parents. Mostly opted for non-dairy milks in their coffees and hot cocoas.

I lived in the same building as Liv Tyler. We rode together in the elevator once. Before I realized it was her (it was a slow elevator), I thought she was a person with developmental disabilities.

I'm sure the steroids and extreme cutting diet were rough on his body. I didn't know that he had a younger girlfriend, ugh. You're probably right about Maria not wanting the divorce finalized, too. They may see some sort of benefit in being apart but still legally married.

Why did you think this?

I’ve always heard Arnold was around 5’10” - 5’11” or so. Not short but not as tall as he claimed.
