When a celebrity in person really underwhelms you

Wow. How did that happen?

Yes! Please spill the details!

I was a tennins pro at resort back in the 80’s. David lee Roth was on tour. His manager asked if I would give Mr. Roth a lesson. The guy could not have been nicer and was super cool. After it was over he asked how much and said “it’s on the house”. About an hour later his manger showed up with 2 back stage passes. Awesome time!!!

Anonymous wrote:The Goo Goo Dolls/Dave Grohl very chill, nice guys. Waited on them at two Great American Restaurants in the early 2000s. Same goes for Connie Chung & Maury Povich. Pretty much to a one, Congress members and Senators were jerks.

Questlove and the rest of the Roots - nice guys, very chill, but extremely stoned while playing basketball prior to doing a college show - like, we were wondering how we were going to get them off the court and on stage.

Various members of Dave Matthews Band, but not DM himself - all nice, down to earth, seemed like attentive parents. Mostly opted for non-dairy milks in their coffees and hot cocoas.

I love that you know the DM Band's members' coffee preferences!

9:31 - Paul Rudd is indeed tiny! I went to high school with him. Super nice guy back then, and from what I've heard, he still is. (a couple of my friends are still in touch with him and his sister.)

Years ago, before she was such an icon, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was seated next to me at a production at Arena Stage. She fell asleep in the second act and basically had her head on my shoulder. I was petrified to move a muscle and wake her up! Didn't initially realize who she was until my friend - a Hill guy - started freaking out over her.

I went to a Ree Drummond / pioneer woman book signing. She was so very pretty in person. Definitely someone who would stand out in a crowd - has a glow and gorgeous presence. I was surprised because on tv she looks absolutely average American every-day person (not an insult).

Also meant to say the camera does add 5-10 lbs. In her case and .. I’ve also seen Angelina Jolie in person (really, no details so wasn’t planning on mentioning it). AJ is SKINNY

My friend is longtime, very close friends with Dave Grohl. He also used to hang out with Kurt Cobain. This is before those guys became famous. he actually used to jam with them (he's also a musician).

The soccer player PELE -- he was very tiny. His flight had arrived early, so he took a cab to his hotel (intercontinental). No one at the reception desk spoke Portuguese or Spanish (1988, USSR) so a Panamanian friend and I translated for him (we we both teen students, having a buffet meal at the hotel since we had foreign passports). He invited us to the evening party, but when we showed up, he acted as if he had never seen us. Also, when we took pictures with him, his bodyguard purposely made it out of focus.
I have met MIKA the singer (American/British/Lebanese). He is just awesome and totally cool.
I am friends with a European royalty who is the sweetest person I have ever met. We have agreed that I will never ask her for favors (I am not even upper middle class). We either meet in airport lounges (when I have my escale) or she comes to my tiny Eastern European country and stays with me in my cottage when no one really recognizes her without any make up.

Claire Danes was super cold to everyone and basically seemed to be over college entirely (though she was in her second year when she was in one of my classes). She was also so thin and pale that she looked actually ill. (She was in my French class.) Barbara Bush, on the other hand, was perfectly nice and normal and was a really good sport about everyone hating on her dad. She legit just seemed to be trying to have a normal college experience, lived in the dorm, etc.

Met Jaime Fox at MIA airport when Any Given Sunday was being filmed. I was a college kid trying to get my heavy post Christmas vacation bag off the carousel and he helped me and was super friendly and nice. Very handsome. No one knew him really but I recognized him from tv.

Met Elizabeth Warren at the Bed Bath and Beyond in Chinatown. She was underwhelming while picking out pillows and candles, which I appreciated very much.

Super chill lady. I'd sniff scented candles with her any day.

He's 6'2". Maybe you saw a look a like shorty?

I used to date the short version of a well known celebrity.

I went to college with a look-alike tiny Brad Pitt.

Schwarzenegger is not 6'2". I've run into him a couple of times, back when he lived (or visited) DC regularly. I'm 5'8", and he was much closer to my height then that. Most of these guys lie and are made to look taller on film. He was huge, though.

I also flew from Bangalore to Frankfurt sitting next to Richard Gere--stood next to him a few times. He's quite a bit smaller than the 5'11" on his bio, too. He was quite nice, but pretty scruffy looking.

Schwarzenegger had a history of body building competitions where height/weight was well documented. Maybe most celebrities can get away with fibbing a bit about their stats but I don't think that was possible for a guy like Arnold. I do wonder if maybe you ran into a look a like.

This. You cannot fake those records.

Celebrities are usually boring because you are boring to them. They get asked the same questions over and over. Try talking about something other than their latest publicity release and they might warm up to you.

I was taking photos of my kid at the ocean, and Jake Gyllenhaal came up to me and kind of got in my face and accused me of photographing him. He was so rude. I pointed out my kid a few feet away from him and he didn’t apologize or anything. On top of everything else, it was pretty awkward. I later heard from a friend who was on an airplane with him that he was rude to her too for no reason at all.

It wasn't a lookalike. I exchanged a few words with him, same accent. He's not short, he's just not particularly tall, and I'm pretty certain not 6'2". Definitely not the giant as portrayed in movies. I think it's hard to be a bodybuilder if you're very tall--that's a sport for slightly smaller men.

Here's a pic of Arnie with Obama, who is 6'1". Looks shorter here, at least to me, and in keeping with my recollection. I picked Obama only because it's pretty easy to find pics of him.

OMG. All you have to do is search in Google images, and you'll find dozens of Obama/Schwarzenegger photos where they're standing side-by-side and look nearly equal in height, and Obama is 6'1". You found the one photo where Obama looks taller based on the angle or a riser. Arnold may have lost an inch in height due to aging and years of weight lifting, but he is not shorter than Obama. There is no way he is 5'10" - 5'11".

Lou Ferrigno was involved with the non-profit where I worked, and I've worked with him at several events. He was 6'5" in his prime. He'd had multiple hip and knee surgeries, and you could tell by his posture that he was in pain. His knees bowed out and his shoulders were hunched. Still, he was a giant. The point to all of this is that if you look at old photos of Lou and Arnold, Arnold was just a few inches shorter than Lou.

I cannot believe how invested I am in this!
