Gang Activity in Montgomery County Shcools?

And in today’s gang related activity:

At least he wasn’t inside the school. But it scares me that apparently the gang individual didn’t have any hesitation about hanging around a school with a weapon.

Yea but I can point to a statistic that says there was more violence 20 years ago so, so, so you are just a racist for bringing this up.

Hi, I think I'm the one you're mocking. Yes, gang activity is an increasing problem in the county. The police are now getting extra funding to focus on it. But the problem I see on DCUM is the exaggeration of what this gang crime means to the general population, and the inevitable wholesale smear of entire regions of the county as crime-infested hell holes. I live in one of the areas people on DCUM seem to think is a barrio war zone, when in fact it is a great place full of my friends.

I commend the police for taking this seriously, and I give credit here to Einstein for being alert to the threat and catching the trespasser before it became a problem.

I'm not either of the PPs. But, I think it means a lot to the general population. We live in Silver Spring, and you can absolutely see how our neighborhood has changed over the last 20 years. Gang crime definitely causes an increase in crime in any area. Do you think that's not true? Gangs in schools are not something we want to encourage. Do you disagree? What exactly do you think the 'exaggeration' is?

Yes, from what I have read, after the economic downturn in 09, anti gang funding dried up, and gang activity started a several years long increase. It does need to be taken seriously and is a problem, but as you say, we are quite a ways from being a war zone.

It's also important that undocumented people feel comfortable reporting crimes, and working with the authorities without fear of deportation. They are big targets of MS13 and keeping them silent won't help matters.

DP. Do you feel like you live in a crime-infested hell hole and a barrio war zone? If not, that's probably what PP thinks the exaggeration is -- because there are plenty of people who think you do.

I'm certain that the parks close to the public at sunset! If you are a PP who posted about not going to the park at night -- why would you go to the park at night?

NP but isn't that the point? People were posting earlier about how it's a shame that you can't use this beautiful park. But if the violent crime is happening at night then why would you write off the park all together? Of course it is not acceptable that there is violent crime in parks in our community, but we can work for change however we can and then use common sense, which is not going at night.

I lived in NYC for years. Spent a lot of time in Central Park. Loved it. But wouldn't go there at night.

Crimes have happened there in the day.

Well sure. Crime happens everywhere, in the nicest places in broad daylight. But you can make common sense decisions. A place crowded with families and runners etc during the day is safer than an isolated space in the dark. Act accordingly.

The point is that places which were perfectly safe in the daytime 3 years ago are no longer safe. Wheaton is over run with gang activity. My friend is a detective and she absolutely will not go to Wheaton Regional any time of day.

What does she think the danger is at Wheaton Regional? I take my child there all the time and see lots of other families doing the same. The drive over is a lot more dangerous.

We also go to Dave and Busters (which is less healthy) but the police seem afraid to go there unless they are dressed in full combat gear like they are ready to storm a beach under heavy fire.

Where do you think that extra funding is coming from?? Some of us who are footing the bill for this stuff would instead like the money to go back into our communities for our children and to have , say, a Community Center to meet and socialize with our neighbors and where our kids could take classes instead of paying to control and police MS-13 gang activity. Does that make any sense?
Instead we are told that despite paying so much in taxes we can barely afford to live here that there’s no money for community infrastructure . No community center, no parks, no playing fields close to home. Just money for more law enforcement and for nice community centers for those communities.

If you move to one of those communities, then you can pay less in taxes and get all of the community amenities. You might also be less likely to think of the county in terms of us over here, them over there.

I don't think taxes in MoCo are that high. I'd happily pay more to benefit education and community services like community centers and gang abatement.

We are paying a huge amount in taxes and getting nothing for it. It all goes to Silver Spring and Wheaton.

So wouldn't it be rational for you to move to Silver Spring or Wheaton?

+1 We have a shiny new library, a lovely park where the old library used to be, and funding to keep class sizes small. Join us, you'll like it over here on the East Side.

Gentrification is coming. Especially around the new train centers and the silver spring city center as young people don’t like to drive.
I hear that homes around those areas are being bought for cheap now with the idea of renting them out.

Gang activity brought to you by Montgomery County politicians.

Fixes , schooling, police force, infrastructure, job center, free legal advice, organization to lobby for more benefits for illegal immigrants, food stamps, heating help, free lunches all around - paid for by the struggling middle class who get nothing in return (but for some reason let it go on).

Other losers include local (middle class& poor) children who now attend school with gang members and people who think it’s ok to be having group sex in the bathroom with 13 year old girls and poor American citizens struggling to get adequate health care, housing and jobs but who don’t have a flashy pandering always meeting with county politicians and sticking a hand out for everyone else’s money spokesperson lobbying on their behalf (they can rot because what are they giving to the politicians anyway?).

Benefits for the wealthy - cheap labor, get to keep your political job with new set of loyal voters, kickbacks.

Does anyone realize that if you immigrate to this country legally you are eligible for NO college financial aid or scholarships if you are not a citizen? But if you are illegal from El Salvador you are supposed to get all expenses paid? What?

In what country could our American citizens immigrate to en masse and get free healthcare, recreation, schooling, legal advice etc. Nowhere because nowhere else is as stupid as Montgomery County maryland. If you want to immigrate to Canada and stay it is a long process and you need skills:

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada.html

In this country we are kicking out our skilled immigrant workforce after their visas run out - I’ve had coworkers doing great work in a technical field of work (productive workers with families and lives) sent home mid job, but if you are illegal from El Salvador you can stay here in Montgomery County forever?
