Have you heard of Davidson College?

Outstanding school. Basically the South's version of a NESCAC school, like Pomona is the West Coast's, and schools like Carleton and Macalester are the Midwest's.

Never heard of it until I moved to North Carolina.

My oldest is looking at Davidson or Elon for science (Biology or Chemistry). The large percentage of women in sororities at both places is a bit of a turn off, though.

Davidson did not have sororities at all when I was there 15 years ago. Then do have eating houses which are super low key.

Seventy percent of women at Davidson join a sorority, according to the Princeton Review. Thirty-nine percent of men join a fraternity, also a turn off.

Previous post regarding information from the Princeton Review is incorrect. My daughter is at Davidson, they do not have sororities, they do have eating houses.

Comparing with Davidson's web site, it looks like Princeton Review equates eating clubs with sororities, which may be unfair. It looks like the eating clubs are very service oriented.

If the people at the Princeton review have anything to do with Princeton University, I would take their word about eating clubs.

You are going to take their word over alumni of Davidson, and parents of current Davidson students? The eating clubs are not like sororities, they are very low key, service-oriented clubs.

I went to Amherst. Visited Davidson with my daughter and we liked what we saw. She's applying.

Saying that you don't know about either of them definitely says something about your social class. Not saying that it is right, or fair, just that it is.

Exactly.

Davidson, Dickinson, Dennison - I get those confused!.

But seriously, Davidson is a fine school - and highly selective.

Davidson, yes, but I've never heard of Williams.

What's a NESCAC?

Seriously? It's a tiny school in NC, from what I gather just reading this thread. Why would we have heard of it?

Obscure like Elon.

Davidson is much more selective/elite. I very much doubt that anyone who is at all knowledgeable about SLACs would even attempt to argue otherwise.

Signed,
not a Davidson grad

Agreed

I'm from NC and know many people who went to Davidson and Elon (and Wake). I graduated HS in 89. The kids applying to the Ivey's and public Ivey's were applying to Davidson and sometimes not getting in. I clearly remember a guy who got into brown but was wait listed at Davidson. Wake too. Elon was not on the same level AT ALL. That said Elon is doing great things these days. Good for them.
