I think the intentions are highly qualified doctors. Hard to fault that.

If I knew the current doj had anything at all to do with the selection of any individual to medical school, I would not be comfortable using that doc's services. But you go right ahead.

No problem. You can just sit home with your homeopathic remedies and traditional medicine. Might free up the waiting rooms a bit. But we know you're all talk and will be tripping all over yourself the next time you have a headache to get a prescription.

Not from some doctor tainted by this backwards administration. I'm fully on board with the miracles of modern medicine.

But only as prescribed by the doctor with the right skin color.

Any skin color is the right skin color as long as they have respect for modern medicine and not RFK Jr. Garbage.

When you have cancer you want the expert on your cancer who is the best oncologist in your area. Spare me your sanctimonious partisan BS.

The best oncologist knows the medicine inside and out but also:

(1) understands science well enough to recognize that RFK Jr. is a dangerous hack
(2) has exceptional patient skills -- oncology is a specialty that requires often longterm, ongoing, patient communication and maintenance, skills not tested on the MCAT but screened for in med school interviews and the holistic part of applications.

The best oncologist has the best track record and is highly regarded. Plenty of doctors have poor bedside manner but are brilliant at what they do. But you stick with your doctors that you see based on "vibes" because that frees up the good ones for everyone else.

Uh, lawyer here, do you not understand that the 1964 civil rights ACT applies?

Exactly! Signed by Lyndon B. Johnson. UVA med school also ran afoul of this, and was given time by DOJ to clean its act up, which it is doing right now. This is one of the many reasons the board had to threaten to fire Jim Ryan. Ryan's response was "Uh, not my problem - I thought they were in compliance with the Act and with Scotus decisions." Uh, no, when you are President of a University, the buck stops with you.

As someone with a lot of experience with a lot of doctors, one of the things that makes a doctor "highly qualified" is the ability to listen to, relate to, and care about a patient. You can take an academically brilliant person, send them to Yale or Harvard or another top law school, and if they lack empathy generally or are working with a community with whom they cannot experience empathy, they will be bad at their job. Doctors like this can excel in research or in a carefully selected specialty (certain surgical specialties require minimal patient interaction, and some specialties allow you to essential select your patients for their demographics) but but them in your standard teaching hospital, and specialty that results in a broad cross section of patients (internal med, emergency med, family med, pediatrics), or any specialty that requires ongoing communication with a broad variety of patients, and they can be a total nightmare to the patient and a tax on the system. Even with good nurses and other medical pros around them.

One good reason for recruiting black and Hispanic doctors is that we have many hospitals serving primarily black and hispanic populations, and you are more likely to wind up with a doctor who has the bedside skills to do that well. Of course white and Asian doctors *can* also serve these populations well, but it requires a higher degree of empathy, which doesn't always co-exist well with the academic credentials required to actually get through med school.

So recruiting a diverse med school class serves an important public health purpose. Diversity of backgrounds in the medical profession results in better medicine.

I didn’t have the energy, but all of this! It’s a fact that the MCAT scores are lower for some groups, but they are an important part to serve their communities. You can be brilliant, but part of care is empathy and relating to your patients. These aren’t the med school students getting the coveted derm and plastic residencies, they are working in primary care and doing a phenomenal job.

It’s so dumb. People want doctors they’re comfortable with and therefore should admit a variety of people (not all men or a particular race).

Not a bummer at all. Don’t you want all doctors to meet the same qualifications regardless of race?

No, bigot troll moron, what I want is effective doctors.

White doctors have been wildly ineffective at treating Black patients for literally hundreds of years, apparently due to implicit bias.

I want Black patients to get the same quality of care as white patients. That’s the difference between you and me - you, and current DOJ leadership, don’t want positive outcomes for Black patients because you are bigots. As noted white supremacist Laura Loomer correctly said in a rare lucid moment, the GOP has a Nazi problem.

Cancer is cancer. Broken bones are broken bones. Heart disease is heart disease.

I really don't understand why anyone cares about the race of their doctor. You just want a good one in times of need, which everyone needs at some point. No one is looking for a best friend when they have a heart attack or stroke or get wrecked in a car accident.

What on earth does the race of a doctor have to do with anything? Most people just want a good, competent doctor when they need one.

And that's it.

Not looking to be besties with the doctor if I have stage 4 cancer or losing a limb. And I find it very weird when people get fixated on the melatonin content of their doctor's skin. That's an issue for the mental health ward.

Okay. Like those bottom of the barrel medical providers affiliated with Yale medical school? Why don't you Google "Yale medical school comments on RFK Jr." and have a read.

This is not true.

There are about as many white kids with top stats as there are asian kids.

10% of asian kids have 1500+ on their SAT while only 2% of white kids do but there are so many more white kids in America that there are more white kids with 1500+ SATs.
When you get to 1550, there may be a few more asian kids but not by much.
Quantity has a quality all its own.

Why would maga care if a lot of doctors are Asian? Does maga have respect for doctors of any race?

This is not a MAGA thing.

When Trump has become a political pariah and an albatross around the Republican neck, the Republican party will still see dividends from beating up woke institutions that discriminate against asians and whites.

Doctor patient relationship is fairly intimate. I'm not sure all doctors can meet the same qualifications. If I'm having menstrual issues, or breast issues or pregnancy issues or other female issues and I kind of personally like to see female doctor. I can imagine there could be a similar comfort level with a doctor of the same race as the patient.

Even if I don't feel that way, I could certainly imagine there could be patients that do. This is an interesting issue. Have there been studies done about it?

That has nothing to do with getting admitted to medical school, passing medical knowledge exams, completing residency/fellowships, and board examinations. The requirements for training should be the same regardless of race.

What is the point of graduating all Asian doctors if some patients need a non Asian doctor? Who will serve those patients?

Nobody needs a non Asian doctor. That is pure racism.

So racists don't deserve medical care?

Ok, then HBCUs can start med schools.

I’m white, not a physician or in healthcare, don’t know anyone who went to an HBCU - but not a racist - so even I know there are a number of HBCU med schools.
