Kids are getting at least 990 hours of school each year, no matter how those days are arranged. Yes, the calendar was a mess in the fall and it was hard to get into any type of routine. But there will still be at least 990 hours of school this year, even with these snow days. Years with little snow get 990+ hours, as unused time for snowdays is never given back and we rarely use all of the time that's allotted. So please direct your concern to a more pressing need.

Np. Not all of us agree that 990 hours "no matter how those days are arranged" is as good as 990 hours of consistent schooling.

OH WELL! You’re not the VDOE. You’re not the school board. You don’t control the weather. None of this is anything you get a say on or that you’ll change by whining about snow days every winter.

Dr Reid is adamant the floggings, I mean PD, will continue as scheduled on Thursday, per the email staff just received.

As if there was any doubt that THIS is what’s most important to Gatehouse.

Yeah super unclear. It will all be virtual or just some of it for some people? Makes no sense.

There’s no way I’m driving across the county in these conditions for a PD.

+1 Hell no.

Everyone else seems to get to work ok now (and surely by Thurs and Fri), feds are opened tomorrow, private businesses, medical offices, County offices.

Seems like you're the exception and not the norm.

Asking teachers to drive to one location-- their typical location-- is reasonable. Asking teachers to go to their typical location and then to drive across the county to a different location is not reasonable when the PD can be done virtually. That's even the case when the weather is fine. There is no reason to have these central PD sessions when teachers are just put in a room with other teachers from their own school.

Bonding with our colleagues from our own school? No. We can do that at our own school. There is no reason to make us drive across the county to sit in a room solely with teachers from our own school.

It is a waste of gas, puts additional stress on roads and vehicles, adds pollution to the environment, is a financial strain for those who do not drive and thus must pay for an Uber, angers teachers, increases anxiety, is difficult for those who have child and pet care needs, and is a complete waste of time.

Not a teacher, but my road is not plowed. It is a white sheet of ice.

It's trauma bonding.

The best is when they have us drive to a school that's as far away from our school as possible, and in the opposite direction from my house, so that I get to spend an extra 1.5 hours on the road that day. And all so I can watch some central office person read me a slideshow that could have been an email (a useless one).

If I can get out of my driveway I'd be willing to go either to my school OR the PD, but not both. It seems like asking a lot given the road conditions.

It is always ridiculous and wasteful to make teachers go to centralized PD/in-services, but it's torture when there is foul weather.

Not for everyone. As a person on the spectrum, I learn less when I am in a novel place with unfamiliar people, and also when I am forced to do group activities. It's all just noise. As an educational organization, FCPS does a trash job in addressing the learning needs of adults. It's almost like a disability/deficit is supposed to disappear when you turn 18.

Why oh why doesn’t Fairfax county require property owners to clear their sidewalks?? First place I lived that doesn’t do this. It would go a long way toward helping get kids back to school.

Arlington normally requires it, but they suspended the rule for this time because it’s basically ice vs snow. Tons of uncleared sidewalks in Arlington, too, this time.

After clearing our driveway and chopping through the mound that was left 10’ out from the end of our driveway to the road that has been plowed once, I think I’d pay the fine for not doing the sidewalk, which we shoveled twice during the day of storm.

There are disappearing turn lanes, very shortened merge areas, exit ramps to the Beltway, and 10ft walls of piled snow at intersections/reduced visibility all over the main roads in Ffx Co (Burke/Springfield I'm looking at you).

So even the main roads aren’t really "cleared" and def can't handle high volume .

Do better vdot. Seems like you're punking us.

The police don't even show up for attempted car theft. They're not going to lift a finger to cite a sidewalk violation.

I considered that too.
