Doesn’t change total In PPs case, travel to Scotland is obviously more expensive than Denver. Assuming travel back for holidays and plus some parental travel, the delta would get you pretty close to ~60k (cost of Boulder). |

Yes, this is the PP whose kid is down to UStA or Boulder and this was the rough number I had in my head - would way rather spend $51 like PP with the 3rd year as that’s approximately $40k ! |
What is your kid going to study at CU and what does he want to do?
My son gave up schools that are much better ranked than CU for St Andrews. Unless he is studying Engineering (no engineering at Sta) or certain Sciences programs, I would not even compare these two universities straight up. But then if he wants to move back to Colorado, then sure….it is a no brainer… |
Maybe psych. She has already declined better ranked universities than CU (Wisconsin, Bates, Northeastern) b/c she really just liked the Boulder vibe, sunshine, and proximity to lots of outdoorsy stuff. Unless St.A blows her socks off in the next few days, Boulder it is! |
If she wants sunshine, then just drop Sta out of her list. While they do have some of the highest number of hours of daylight in the UK (~1600), in the winter the sunsets at 3:45pm….. |
Yes…. Coming from Maine so she’s used to dark shortly after 4 but doesn’t mean she likes it! |
I know CU has a good Psy program. But St Andrews program and faculty are top notch in Psychology. They were ranked #1 in Psychology by some of their rankings in the UK. My nephew goes to CU and my son just graduated from St.A. I realize Boulder has a cool vibe, but this is one of the main things that attracted my son to St Andrews. There is an amazing vibe there. There is also a lot of outdoorsy things to do there. Tiny village, where you know everyone and vice versa. It is very very nice. Everyone is from somewhere else, so they are all in the same boat. The plus for him was that he visited 29 countries during his 4 years and now has very close friends all over the world. |
DD just accepted Sta offer. Gave up 3 T35s.
Oh well….Scotland here we go. |
So, how was the StA visit? |
Great! She loved it & is likely to accept. We spoke at length with a number of US students (5) who were first or second year. Saw inside 2 dorms. Spent two full days in the town, everything was in bloom and we had good weather. It’s pretty awesome. Biggest drawback for us is the food & meal plan (not insignificant given a medical issue). The students we met were really happy there. They all noted the inexpensive travel they are able to do. They said is is DARK in winter - daylight only from 9-3 - but noted they are away on Xmas break for a bulk of that time. The many societies were also a high point. Loved the town so much. |
My son just made the same choice -- St Andrews over CU Boulder. We're in-state with CU and while that means much lower tuition, it also means that it feels like less of an adventure since it's in his backyard. (Now as for why someone from Colorado is on DCUM: I stumbled on this forum last year and find it interesting and useful, even though I'm neither from DC nor a Mom.) |
Great! And congratulations! She just officially accepted. Now looking for a roommate. There is a very helpful Facebook group for parents of St Andrews students. |
It's ok. Dads are allowed too. And lots of people from outside the DC area since many topics are universal no matter how much DMV people (oh yes I said that) scream. |
Im from Texas. Dad here too. DS is also accepting his offer today. |
