U of St Andrews - Admissions per State

Anonymous
For those of us with kids interested in St Andrews, came accross the data for US Applications and Acceptances per state between 2021 and 2023.

Some interesting Stats for those who care:

Number of Enrolled students from the US:

2021: 384
2022: 524
2023: 471

NY and CA have on avg 1/3 of the US enrollment (about 50/50 between both states)
VA, TX, NJ, MA and CT account for roughly another 1/3. (Almost evenly divided with CT a little ahead of the avg).

But the one interesting stat is to look for which of these states outperforms their offers.
For example, California averaged 15.3% of the total US applications over the 3 year period, but accounted for 16% of the offers.
Besides California, Connecticut, MA and VA outperformed their applications.
The other ones (NY, TX, NJ) all underperformed.

Another interesting find is that in 2023 almost 50% of those getting offers from Connecticut end up enrolling.
The numbers for every other state is about 33% for 2023. Wonder why CT is so ahead of the game here with enrollment?

Considering St Andrews concentrate their US efforts in NY and California these findings are not surprising. Also not surprising that the vast majority of placements in the US are in NY and CA, with DC, Chicago and Dallas a distant 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Are they counting boarding school kids in the state where they go to school? That’s probably the story with the Connecticut numbers.

I live in CT and there are a few mid range boarding schools that send 4-8 (always girls for some reason) to st Andrews every year.

OP here. They are counting every US applicant based on their home address from application.

I guess their Frehsman class is about 2000 kids. So there is a lot of Americans there…

Edinburgh has more Americans, but a much smaller % of the total student population.

OP, do you have a link to this data? Just curious to see if it includes anything else.

For those considering st Andrews how are you thinking about the next work and connections for your student - how many us empluwrs have heard of it?
Are you considering other places such as other unis in Canada and UK?
How would you compare for example mcgill and st Andrews reputations?

If there is a uni in the UK outside Oxbridge where most, let me rephrase, most employers you care about, know about it St Andrews. Simply due to the sheer number of US students that graduate from St Andrews.

Just spend a few minutes on LinkedIn looking at St Andrews alumni in the US and the types of jobs they are getting.

I was sent a spreadsheet about this by our UK college consultant. What else would you like to know?

Wonder how many of the users here have kid accepting their offers for 2025?

My kid just accepted his offer for Management and IR.

Congratulations, PP!

My kid is there and LOVES it. The high number of CT acceptances reflects the high number of boarding school kids.
Most of my son's friends are Americans (about 60%-ish) but his flat mate is European and so is his girlfriend (British -gulp!)
It is a fantastic place for an independent, adventurous kid. It is academically rigourous- hard to get into from the US but Ivy-level difficult from the UK and Scotland.

US STEM hiring manager here. I would be very happy to hire a STEM grad from St Andrews. Cannot speak to other degrees…

Which specific degrees are US students being accepted to? How popular are various degrees with US students?
