Let's see how financially better off they would be if, to start, they had to purchase all the land and buildings from the state. |
PP here Good point. I guess my point is that they can fund themselves without being a burden on the state budget if they could admit more than 1/3 of their students from OOS. |
Yes. I honestly hope this happens (and maybe it'll become necessary when the enrollment cliff hits). It'd be great if it was around 60/40 or 55/45 like Purdue or even flip it and have most from OOS like Michigan Ann Arbor. |
| Colleges come and go, but Wu-Tang is forever. |
That is like saying an orbiting space capsule didn't need its booster rockets. Virginia invested in UVA for it to educate Virginians. |

The problem will sort itself out in a few years. |
+1000 VA literally is one of THE TOP states for state schools. Ranging from UVA/WM/VaTech down to Radford and their (forget the name) "we think you might be a candidate, so we will admit you and once you prove yourself with remedial courses we will let you continue for 4 year degree". There is literally a school for everyone. And yes, if your kid cannot gain admissions to any of the top 3, then they likely are not good candidates for those schools and would do better at JMU/GMU/and on down the list. Just like Most T25 schools are smaller 5-8K undergrad populations, and their appeal would change drastically if they expanded to 15K students. |
US college admissions does NOT have to be stressful. Learn the definitions of High reach, reach, target, safety and likelies. Then actually follow it and admit where your kid fits. Then select 2-3 reaches (with 1 high reach if desired), 3-4 Targets (and include a range within targets---dont make them all High Targets ), and then 3-4 safeties/likelies. Then Show demonstrated interest everywhere. Even your likely/safeties need to think "we are this kid's#1 choice" If you do this, your kid should get into 1-2+ targets and at least 2 of their Safeties/likelies (really should get into all their likelies) And possibly get into 1 or more reaches, but very likely will get WL or rejected (if those Reaches are in T25-30 range) |
Yup---be careful what you wish for. Those OOS students help keep In-state tuition and costs lower |
You don't get to decide that. Fact is---a kid with a 1520 is really not any different than one with a 1580. For even the top schools, it's "Great you met the SAT threshold, now let's see the rest of your application". Because in real life and the workforce, a lot more matters than just how you perform on a 4 hour test at 8am on a Dec Saturday. Just like someone with a 3.9 UW is not that much different than a 4.0UW. And wait until you graduate college and realize that you are working alongside someone who only got a 3.1 in college despite you getting a 3.9, and you likely are being paid the same. Or there's a chance the 3.1 person is now your manager More to life than just grades and SAT scores. That's why we have holistic admissions |
This says it receives 11.65% from the state. “The recently approved FY2024-2025 budget, though not recovering to the proportional levels of state support in FY2004-2005, did reflect a significant increase in state funding (11.65%), with the total state support of $282 million, reaching UVA's highest-ever dollar amount for state funding.” https://uvafinance.virginia.edu/budget-management/budgeting#:~:text=The%20recently%20approved%20FY2024%2D2025,dollar%20amount%20for%20state%20funding. |
We don’t. The answer is 11.65% funding from the state. DP https://uvafinance.virginia.edu/budget-management/budgeting#:~:text=The%20recently%20approved%20FY2024%2D2025,dollar%20amount%20for%20state%20funding. |
And for nursing, it does not matter where you go, as long as the school has enough access to clinical and the NCLEX pass rate is good (JMU is almost always 92%+ that is good and demonstrates the material is taught well) You don't get a higher paying job because you went to UVA vs JMU---you get paid the same for the same nursing degree. And what you do on the job determines how you advance in your career |
Harvard said the same thing. Guess what, it turned out to be BS as we suspected. |
