TJ Admissions

I think part of what is impacting the current crop of kids from taking the more specialized courses is fewer kids that either: 1) can swiftly test out of a language with the placement exam due to knowing it already or 2) knew to start it in 7th or 8th at least to free up class slots while at TJ.

DC is there now and does band and has done the summer classes (PE before 9th and 10th, the extra social studies and EPF before 11th) but still has space for only 1 real elective since the other class slot is taken by language each year.

If you don’t do music it is easier of course but a lot of kids do band or orchestra.

with no music, world lang in 9th & 10th, summer pe 9&10, summer 4th social studies, there would be room for 8 electives total?

Would never know it based on the complaining but looks like Asian is enrollment is at a historic high.

The school got bigger in the class of 2025 and yet the asian population got smaller. The asian population had been getting bigger pretty much every year since the school opened as more and more asians moved into the area.

So? One race doesn’t “own” the magnet school. Asians remain by far the overwhelming majority at TJ despite being a notable minority in the areas it draws from.

No one owns TJ but we shouldn't be stacking the deck racially either.

I think 9 elective slots.

4 slots otherwise taken by music.
2 slots free for last two years w/o language
And then the “standard” 4 slots even music/language kids have each year. One of these has to be used to take computer foundations though at some point in HS so doesn’t really count as free.

It’s not stacked. Asians remain the overwhelming majority of the school despite being a much smaller minority of the student area.

Not stacked all the way, but the stacked in the bottom half. Yes, top half is overwhelmingly Asian, because merit and hardwork is required to place oneself in the top half. Unlike a non-merit admission offer, top class standing cant be given, it must be earned by the student. Interesting observation, smaller minority in the area but overwhelming majority in all fcps stem programs, not just at TJ.

Asians make up over 60% of the enrollment and Asian enrollment is at an all time historic high in 2024. The largest beneficiary of the admission changes were even Asians. To say it's stacked against Asians is crazy.

Undoubtedly, the largest part of TJ continues to be hardworking and stem passionate Asian students, without whom there is no TJ. FCPS knows this. Even with the flexibility to randomly pick students on a non-merit basis for past four years, FCPS has pretty much concluded and demonstrated that they cannot reduce the TJ Asian student admission count below 300, about 57%, or roughly 2/3rd of the class, without the risk of a drastic ranking collapse. There’s no disagreement on this point.

However, what is concerning is FCPS has forcefully brought down the TJ Asian student representation from 70+% four years ago, to now at 57%, and the decline in overall school performance is evident with drastic drop in NMSF count, and decline to 14th national ranking.

I agree it’s crazy to say it’s stacked against Asians when they make up 60% of the student body while being nowhere near that in % of the wider student population. But it is not at an all time high. It’s dropped slightly since the class of 2024-2023 peaks.

Give it a few years, and it will return to its all-time high. TJ rigor demands hardwork and deep stem passion, and that favors Asians who readily enroll in the most advanced coursework. FCPS suppression tactics don’t last long; ultimately, a student’s hardwork prevails.

PP here, the method is currently so random it's not stacked against anyone but they made it random to reduce the asian population and increase everyone else's and reduced the merit filter to do so.

Racism can last a looooong time.

Yale had a 10-12% cap on jews from the 1910s until the 1960s and had a cap on asians until very recently.
Institutions won't collapse just because they are being racist. Racist institutions can survive and thrive, I mean the mlb went a long time without black players.
Racists think that the racism helps preserve the prestige and exclusivity of the institution. We've seen all the comments here from white people saying they wouldn't go to harvard if it became too asian.

TJ rigor demands hardwork and deep stem passion, and that favors Asians who readily enroll in the most advanced coursework. FCPS suppression tactics don’t last long; ultimately, a student’s hardwork prevails.

They can reduce the rigor.

+ A million

The current policy is most unfair to the most deserving students. While every system has its drawbacks, the current system makes it very difficult to identify truly gifted students.

Agree each system has its drawbacks and I like the current one better than the old one but they will need to figure out how to add another layer to the general pool criteria at least like counselor recc’s since there is not a way presently for the true genius kids to show that. Froshmore process is the main route for it.

The whole SO team in my DC MS was accepted at TJ plus some kids who won the math olympiad, debate and such, and some random kids who also known smart.
I don’t know who is the most deserving and the truly gifted according to you.
