For those of us who are ignorant, is "DC Black Upper Class" synonymous with African American? Or to ask it a different way, what fraction of these upper class families are Caribbean or African?

Definitely Caribbean and African, cause these takes are dead wrong

It depends on where you are

In North East, it's a mix of majority African and Caribbean and minority African American, in the mid Atlantic and the south it's majority African american, on the west coast it's majority African American

meant face racism, i remember a black girl who was a dance major was told by a Harvard professor that she would have gotten a better grade if she focused on her science paper as much as she did dance

Sorry, but how is that racist? Anti-fine arts maybe?

that's not how a professor is supposed to talk to a student, that's how your parent talks to you

DP. I’m Black and I don’t think what the professor said was racist. Speaking of her parents, they should have told her not to waste their money (or her time) by majoring in dance. It sounds like the entire family lacks common sense.

what what i understand, she started her own dance company in high school

The major with the highest percentage of black students at top schools is African American studies

What does that have to do with being a dance major? AA studies and dance are NOT the same.

What are you REALLY trying to say?

My point is African Americans usually major in things that are irrelevant to high paying jobs

1. Cite your source (with facts, not your opinions); and
2. That doesn’t apply to AA who are a part of the Black elite. That’s why they’re the Black elite.

Being a Harvard student/graduate doesn’t automatically mean you’re a member of the Black elite. It just makes you a student/graduate of an elite college. Unless your parents are double or triple digit millionaires or billionaires (bankrolling your artistic lifestyle), majoring in dance at an Ivy is a wasted opportunity.

Which was obviously difficult and stressful, because she is one of the approximately three people of her generation that has taken up cigarettes

1. Film major/film maker/film director/film producer are VERY different from dance major (eg, Spielberg, Lucas, Lee, even Perry);

2. See my point, above, about having parents who are at least double-digit millionaires (the Obamas are); and

3. Was the Harvard dance major also the daughter of a former U.S. President?

One daughter went to Harvard, and one went to Duke, according to this thread, shouldn't one of them have went to Duke
