meant face racism, i remember a black girl who was a dance major was told by a Harvard professor that she would have gotten a better grade if she focused on her science paper as much as she did dance

Sorry, but how is that racist? Anti-fine arts maybe?

that's not how a professor is supposed to talk to a student, that's how your parent talks to you

DP. I’m Black and I don’t think what the professor said was racist. Speaking of her parents, they should have told her not to waste their money (or her time) by majoring in dance. It sounds like the entire family lacks common sense.

what what i understand, she started her own dance company in high school

don't you mean one went to UMich..... i don't blame you this thread makes me hate the word Duke

Yes, our community certainly needs another dance company. 🙄

The major with the highest percentage of black students at top schools is African American studies

What does that have to do with being a dance major? AA studies and dance are NOT the same.

What are you REALLY trying to say?

My point is African Americans usually major in things that are irrelevant to high paying jobs

1. Cite your source (with facts, not your opinions); and
2. That doesn’t apply to AA who are a part of the Black elite. That’s why they’re the Black elite.

Being a Harvard student/graduate doesn’t automatically mean you’re a member of the Black elite. It just makes you a student/graduate of an elite college. Unless your parents are double or triple digit millionaires or billionaires (bankrolling your artistic lifestyle), majoring in dance at an Ivy is a wasted opportunity.

Malia Obama graduated from Sidwell and went on to graduate from Harvard with a film degree

1. Film major/film maker/film director/film producer are VERY different from dance major (eg, Spielberg, Lucas, Lee, even Perry);

2. See my point, above, about having parents who are at least double-digit millionaires (the Obamas are); and

3. Was the Harvard dance major also the daughter of a former U.S. President?

One daughter went to Harvard, and one went to Duke, according to this thread, shouldn't one of them have went to Duke

It's not racism to point out that generational African Americans have different ideas and needs than other black students. Are we going to bring this energy to Caribbean Student Unions or East African student organizations? No? Okay then this isn't "xenophobia."

NP: I found this infographic. The majority of African American students do major in lower paying majors: social sciences, health, social work, and education. But not the arts/dance.

This is not racism at all! It's the truth. This type of constructive criticism benefits black students. I am a black parent. I commend the professor for speaking up and steering the student towards science. I would have told this student the exact same thing. That professor wants her to take advantage of the wonderful resources and courses that Harvard has to offer. Focusing on dance at Harvard is a waste IMO. Now putting her energy into science at Harvard will propel this student to greater heights.

Here is where the black elite are sending their kids to college

Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Brown, University of Chicago, Harvard made the top 5 for universities

Amherst, Swarthmore, pomana, harvey mudd, haverford for top 5 liberal arts colleges

Georgetown seems to be pretty low , and duke seems to be somewhere as the middle

Thank you for posting this. So much of this thread has been so mistaken. Nice to see real data. Would be even better if they had "class" data points as well - but this is better than all the pure guessing!

Are you able to count? Based on the linked lists, the Black elite (and/or regular Blacks) are NOT sending their children to colleges in this area in large numbers. Only 2 out of 52 colleges made the list (JHU & Georgetown).
