Arlington: school board/county board candidates

Anonymous
ATS isn’t in hot demand though. Lots of elementary parents (and research) don’t want the homework every day model, and are perfectly happy sending their kids to their neighborhood school.

But for those Type A parents, ATS’s lottery is there for you. There is value to having other learning models available to your kids. APE’s going to have a really hard time convincing the community otherwise.

Your friends are dumb.

ACdc is dumb by putting a DINO in the ballot without a vetting process.

Right now they're all about "improving learning outcomes" and saying all the right things (but very much mirroring what PDE and IWF is saying without the culture wars rhetoric), but with Miranda on the Board and them infiltrating all of the other community groups, I won't be surprised when all Arlington will all be talking about banning books and denying Transgender rights again.

I blame the ACDC who did not vet them and took Miranda at her word. Nobody I know wants to vote for her. Not any of the APS teachers who live in Arlington who had to put up with their harassment during the pandemic, not anyone who cares about minority kids. Probably not even the four people who will have to work with her, no matter what anonymous people say anonymously.

I'm leaving her vote blank.

I’m guessing they are going to lean into “school choice” and more subtle ways to tear down APS.

What does that even mean? Arlington County can't issue vouchers.

But APE can certainly advocate for that.

And they can do that, right now, today. This has nothing to do with who is on the school board. I think you're being a little paranoid.

and you're very naive. APS has a legislative package and a lobbyist at the state level. Who do you think sets it?

I don't know how much power you think the school board- let alone one member has- but this is not a rational line of thinking. Also, for the 10,000th time, she's the DEMOCRATIC nominee. I'm voting for her and I'm not in APE and neither are my friends.

She's not a real Dem. She's a DINO. Lots of MAGA friends and more.

How many times have you sock-puppeted this thread? No one takes your childish name calling seriously.

Put ATS aside. Why do you think parents are trying to get into option schools? It's overwhelmingly South Arlington families in poorly performing school desperately trying to get into ATS or Campbell. One of the main reasons people are against vouchers is because of brain drain. How are the APS option schools any different? They have the same result. Trust me Campbell ES isn't doing anything different than the neighborhood school except it's an escape valve.

It actually is in hot demand. There were 320 applicants for kindergarten out of 1973 total kindergartners in the district. There are 25 elementary schools in APS and 16% of the incoming K kids were in the lottery for this one.

We didn't apply to the lottery for ATS because I'm not committing to being at the bus stop at 7:10am and traveling across the county to pick up for aftercare, but I certainly wouldn't mind if we implemented homework and other ATS-like elements in our school.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there are multiple posters on here who are posting about Miranda being a DINO. It's widely known. There are clearly APE and Miranda supporters on DCUM who are getting posts removed when someone tries to post truthfully about actions APE members took the first time she ran regarding participation in the "Democratic" caucus. You'll probably get this one removed too. But you can't rewrite history. People have screen shots.

People are against vouchers because they take money away from public schools. Option schools are part of APS, so money isn't leaving the system.

Personally, we are in an option school, and it's not for the reason you said.

A whole 16%? Where are my fainting salts??

Please tell me also how many of the same parents entered other K lotteries and selected those schools instead.

I’m pretty convinced that there’s only 1-2 APEs replying ad nauseum on this thread myself, saying the same thing over and over. Miranda will likely win tomorrow, but only because she scammed the system. I agree. I blame ArlDems and their primary process. I’m still not voting for her tho.

Anonymous wrote:I’m leaving the ballot blank. Like another PP wrote, it won’t stop her from getting on to the board, but at least I won’t have helped her get there.

I’m not gonna vote for someone who acts like she deserves credit for living in the Valley when, as some of her supporters claimed during her first run, she and her husband could afford to live anywhere in Arlington. White savior much?

Yeah she lived in the Valley but sent one kid to private school, and didn't send the others to the neighborhood school. Not good enough for her and Mr. Miranda MAGA apparently.

TEMPORARILY sent one to private. They went Arlington Montessori for public.

Exactly, they avoided going to Drew. With the black and brown kids.

Stop this nonsense right now. I can barely stomach even spending the energy to confront the sheer ignorance in this post, but, Miranda currently lives in Green Valley. Presently. She was on Drew's PTA. Run your eyeballs instead of your mouth and do some research, it will serve you better.

How many years have her three kids attended Drew, collectively?

How many have YOUR kids attended there?

Do you think you're clever? None of us are running for the School Board. Miranda is. I have never heard her say why she won't send her own kids to the neighborhood school with the black and brown kids in their neighborhood.

I have. And it has nothing to do with skin color; everything to do with getting the educational needs of her own kids. Just like all you other parents who won't live anywhere near these schools. You just avoid it in a more "acceptable" manner. Virtual school didn't cut it - for a lot of us. She, like many others even in the "superior" schools up north, put her kid in private.

Do you even hear yourself? Drew isn't good enough for her own kids. But sure, nothing to do with the skin color of those who are there. Got it.

And she didn't put all of her kids in private, but she made sure to get them all out of Drew.

Just like you did, except you weren't even willing to live in such a neighborhood to begin with and that's how you made sure your kids would never have to go to the worst-performing school in the system. And NO....people don't pull their kids out of Drew because of the skin color of the students. They pull them out because their kids' basic educational needs aren't being met. The fact that that correlates to the student demographics is a separate issue.

Listen to yourself! Drew is good enough for the black and brown kids in Green Valley who have no other options but it doesn't meet the "basic educational needs" of Miranda's own precious snowflakes. And sure, this has nothing to do with demographics, nothing at all. Miranda's fake white savior complex sickens me.

All you do is deflect.

Look at YOU deflecting from the fact that you literally said that the school that the black and brown kids go to doesn't meet the "basic educational needs" of Miranda's own children so she's totally justified in sending her kids out of the neighborhood.

Not a deflection. Perhaps that word doesn't mean what you think it means.
The problem is, that school doesn't meet the basic education needs of MOST of its students, regardless of their skin color. ANY parent would be justified in sending their kids to an option program. But, as noted earlier, nobody criticizes a person of color living in the neighborhood for doing so.

So many people apply for the lottery to see what happens and then change their mind. The more interesting stat may be how the waiting lists move after notification. Again the APEs interpreting data badly.

What am I deflecting from? We're discussing Miranda Turner, a candidate for school board. Some things that people are bringing up about her seem to make you uncomfortable.

From explaining why you don't send your kids there, why you don't live in the neighborhood.
I'm not uncomfortable in the least. My kids went to school with the black and brown kids K-12.

I chose a no homework school for my child because research strongly suggests that homework at the elementary levels doesn’t improve learning outcomes at all and can be harmful if too much is given.

ATS is completely overrated.

You can easily have an ATS without all the homework. Homework isn't the critical factor for ATS' success.
