I don’t like that they asked the question in a vacuum, though. Obviously people might say they prefer a longer break, but if that means school goes until late June as a result, they may weigh the response differently.

The way the calendar falls in Dec 2025/Jan 2026 is the issue they are trying to address. MCPS doesn't like to have single school days during a week, and 12/24 is Wednesday. They either have school on 12/22 (Mon) and 12/23 (Tue) and 1/2/26 (Fri), have weird one-day extension for 1/2/26 or have a two-week break. They are pushing it back to the community to vote, because it will necessarily extend the school year by 3 days to have a two-week winter break

Personally I'd prefer to extend the year a few days and make that 2 weeks.

I'm team Summer Is Too Long anyway, but I never understand the huge reaction against school getting out a bit later in June. (Although I do get that in general it makes sense to start earlier and end earlier, re: May testing.)

That period after Memorial Day, when summer swim is underway and before school lets out is a challenge - brain half in summer!

Agree. There is absolutely no learning happening after Memorial day anywhere.

Where is this asked? I see the 2nd 24-25 survey but nothing for 25-26 yet.

After the first page of questions about 24-25, there is an additional page with some questions about 25-26.

On the second page of the survey.

This would be awful for my HS students who don't travel. They would be doing nothing for two weeks while it's bad weather? No.

And for my own little kids with a bundle of energy. That's a long time home with them being out of a routine, even if we do travel for part of it

Just give the next two calendars a middle finger for having midweek holidays. I agree about the weather so maybe it's best to travel in such years. When they opened for a 2 day week before or after the break many people have started the break early to grab the previous weekend or ended it late for the following weekend. Other two day weeks like Thanksgiving and possibly the last days of school serve their purpose due to 180 day requirement but this is longest in school break of the year (even when it is 11 days like recent years) and it's a while to April.

If all schools had fully functioning AC I would feel differently about these options

It’s like three extra days. Get a grip.

It's 2 extra days at most, I can't imagine them doing a 1 day week. The big monopoly is where do the religious holidays fall? If 2 are on a weekend that can makeup for the extra days needed for the mid week holidays.

I think that choice is tied into the ability to do a whole unit, or at least accomplish something new, after the holiday break.

It has nothing to do with curriculum. They are all designed for 45 day quarters. Draft A end of MP2 is on Chinese new year.

That second page wasn’t there initially. I saw the email arrive and did the survey almost immediately (with specific feedback.

Are you a teacher? MCPS pays well. Rewarding a bunch of people who hate to work and want over 4 months off a year.

So much reteaching in the first semester from all the holidays.

I so wish more school districts spread out breaks

In Europe the schools stagger beaks so not all schools on break simultaneously. It makes vacation spots less crowded.

Do you take pride in work being your entire life? Most people hate to work. I do too. (Nope. Not a teacher.) Just a government contractor who figured out how to make 6 figures and only work 6 months a year, but you don't hear about miserable people such as yourself complaining about people like me. However, you do find these on every single teacher post in existence. So embarrassing.
