Update (this was my prior post). My kid was just accepted to Pitt for CS today (11/21).

Congrats! Where did you find the acceptance? A letter or student portal?

Thanks. The "buttons" appeared in the portal mid-morning and the status is listed as complete. No letter yet, but I understand that takes a few days after the buttons appear. Of course, it won't feel official until the letter comes.

My son just got an email that there was a notice in the portal.

DD got in and then 2-3 weeks later we got the notice of aid.

Just curious, is the notice of aid clearly indicated in an email to the applicant, or they check the portal to see something? DS admitted like 3 weeks ago. Not really expecting any merit aid, but would be nice.

Accepted to engineering last week. Applied around 10/10. Received an email.

Also received mail with acceptance to Penn State today.

We're still waiting but my kid didn't apply until 10/24 (app moved to pending on 10/31).

This is me who gave the above update. My kid got the accept/decline buttons this morning.

How are people learning about merit aid? DD got in a few weeks ago but we haven't seen any new emails since the notification about the decision.

if getting any, a letter will show up in document portal

Older DD is a junior at Pitt and younger DD is still waiting. From what I remember 8 weeks was the norm.

My kid got a letter that they need to see mid-year grades. Has a 1230 SAT and low rigor with a 3.5 gpa. I was hoping she'd go to a smaller school. I am surprised they did not outright reject her.

Acceptance email 11/04
Applied 10/13
Email that app moved to review phase 10/17

Update: merit award posted 11/13/22
5k/yr (OOS)—so Pitt will probably be scratched off the list
(1480 SAT, top 5% of class, solid/typical but not wow ECs)

I'm afraid we're in the same boat. "Only" looking for $10k. Accepted CS 10/17. 3.98/4.5, 1560, NMSF. No merit. Told DS to hang on until March. Doubtful I'm sure.

It is very popular because (1) it is a good school academically, (2) nice sized city and good school spirit, (3) rolling admissions so you can have a solid acceptance early, and (4) relatively reasonable out of state cost and it gives merit aid. The have a good honors college and give a decent number of full scholarships for really strong students. The acceptance rate has gone down a bit but still over 50%. Clearly there are rejections, most people don’t talk about them here.

they do reject people, the admissions rate is below 50% now, but nobody is going to talk about their kid getting rejected unless it's a very selective school (Ivy-tier, UVA, etc.)

My DD applied to Pitt but I do not think she'll do well there. She has a 3.3 uw from a Bethesda public school; low rigor and a 1240 superscored SAT. A lot of community service but no other impressive ECs. I think it's a great school but not for her. I feel bad saying this but hoping for a rejection.

PP here. DD received notification today that they need to see mid-year grades. Do you think this is for admission to the main campus or a satellite campus? Should she reach out to her AO?

Only way to find out is to ask. As a point of reference, my daughter had a 33 ACT (~1450 SAT equivalent) on one try with no prep, a 3.8 unweighted GPA, 9 APs from a middle of the road MCPS and she has found Pitt to be VERY challenging academically. She’s in the biology program and it’s very difficult. It probably varies based on the major. I definitely wouldn’t do a satellite campus.

My son got in a few weeks ago but has not seen anything about merit...looks like you heard about merit quickly? Does not hearing quickly mean he is likely not getting any or just that some kids take longer? He's high stats so I expected some merit (or maybe they wait to see if high stats kids pull out for ED admission elsewhere?)

Curious what kind of merit they are giving now. My DD got in two years ago and got $25K/year merit. ACT of 29
